Narrow escape in Bang Saphan

Post by lomuamart »

From today's Bangkok Post:

Narrow escape

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN :The leader of a local conservation group protesting against a giant smelting plant narrowly escaped injury when a gunman fired at his house in Bang Saphan district yesterday.

Supoj Songseang, 40, said he heard a motorcycle stop in front of his house about 2am, and then the gunman opened fire.

He told the police he was working on the first floor, while his wife and their 14-year-old daughter were sleeping upstairs.

Only 15-20 minutes before the shooting occurred he had left his desk and lain down on a nearby sofa.

"I would be dead, had I sat at that desk a little longer," said the Mae Rampheung Conservation Group chairman, who has led the protest against Sahaviriya Group's 90-billion-baht smelter for more than two years.

Lucky escape.

I wonder why with all the various conservation groups and the rest in the World today, more hasn't been made of the many executions over the years that have happened in Thailand to such people, presumably at the behest of those they are in the way of?

I was in that area a few weeks back and there are massive hand-written signs up all over the place from the locals saying "Dracula Keep Out" and "Dracula We Do Not Want You Here", "No Melting Iron" etc etc.

Hopefully they'll catch the gunman and he'll spill the beans.

What I have been told is that these type of people do not employee hit men but keep it in the family. They own the police force so can not be caught.

The campaign to remove the plant is large but does not seem to have any members in powerful positions.

Unless the government step in and finance a move to somewhere more suitable it will stay.

Maybe someone can help my poor memory, but I remember problems there before, and not that long ago.

Happens everywhere, the rain forest ranchers/loggers and local environmental people having the same wild west shootouts.

Here in Los Angeles it's the more civilized gang drive by shootings
