IMHO, the BKK Post and The Nation are feeble mouthpieces for what's going on here. Try:
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia.html
Or just Google the situation.

Don't think you need to worry too much kendo, the Thais would never give them an inch of Thai soil, maybe the temple, but are more interested in the border.

Number 2, the Cambodians are no match for the Thais, armed forces wise, and I don't think they will try anything. I stayed in Korat a couple of days ago and that's where Wing 1 is. There are F-15s and F-16s taking off all the time, only 20 mins away from that area. This is probably to send the Cambodians a clear message.

However, having said all of this, UNESO and the UN should know better than to stick their long, fat noses into these kinds of things. It wasn't a problem until they did that.

Thanks Lomu i have just read the article in the Asia times and have booked marked there site.

I did not know that that the Angkor Wat was once under Thai rule, the Angkor Wat is 4 hours away from our border crossing, so it just shows how much these borders have changed over the years.

Spitfire the Thai's won't loose face here, but it does not stop the Cambodians having sporadic cross border fighting, when the wife was a kid she said it would go quiet, for a while and then the shelling would start at night and small arms fire would break out and they used to run as fast as they could with there hearts in there mouths.
My wife's grand parents house, a bomb crashed through the roof but did not explode, the bomb is now in a museum in Surin.
My wife is a very happy strong person and normaly nothing bothers her but this issue is, and i am worried because she is going home for a month end of August i will be monitoring this situation daily. :|

The Post and Nation are feeble mouthpieces for whoever happens to be in power at the time. Out of the two I find the Nation marginally better.

In addition to ATol is www.channelnewsasia.com , they're pretty good.

I find Google news a good all round source too:

A report today on CNN said Samak phoned his Cambodian counterpart, and Cambodia have agreed to stop the UN approach for help and the two foreign ministers are meeting in Siam Reap this Monday to try and sort it out.
Hopefully *cough* common sense *cough* will prevail and it'll end peacefully. http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiap ... index.html

I have complete faith in my government to resolve this peacefully for the benefit of the country and it's citizens. **This statement has been endorsed by Buksida**

:lach:

It wouldn't surprise me if both Samak and Hun Sen staged this so that they could "fix" it and improve their images. Elections are always coming up in Cambodia and Samak is about as popular as a fart in a lift.

All you had to worry about are the old Khmer Rouge.
All along the borders of Buriram, Surin etc you heard people count:
mueae
beer
bai
bone
pram
pra mueae
pra beer

etc.
If you can get through 1- 10 then you're a star.
Chok dii!!

Think you're right kendo about the chance of sporadic border fighting, quite within the realms of possibility. What I should have included in the previous post was that I can see that after both sides spend a bit of time posturing for the domestic nationalistic crowd, the Cambodians getting their temple and the Thais getting their border, nobody loses face, both get what they want, easy way out, some kind of acceptable calm returns.

Well, that's the sensible solution, whether they also see it like that is a different matter. Maybe they both want to have a pop at each other, just don't want to be blamed for the kick-off.

Thailand just up'd the stakes this afternoon. The Thai military commander handed a letter to Cambodian authorities stating the temple and entire area is within Thailand. This is per the Bangkok Post MMS news alerts. Pete

There is now another temple in this dispute the Ta Muen Thom temple, Phanom Dong Rak, Banteay Meanchey, i have found the province but Multi Map and the Google Map are not that good along the border, and i can not find any other info, does anyone have a good map. I know one thing this temple is a lot closer than the Preah vihear temple to my house in Kapchoeng. Any other info appreciated.
