The husband hasn't ever spoken a word to me in four years - don't blame him, he's a pilot.
His wife is sufferable and gets on reasonably well with my wife when she's here. That's it really, until tonight.
The pilot was absent and his wife joined us for a drink. I noticed a few things:
Despite how bad my Thai is, I could understand roughly what was being said - Mrs pilot knew that.
Photos of England from two years ago came out - Mrs pilot had never been there, or anywhere.
Coffee table photo books of Thailand, China, SE Asia and the UK came out for her to look at - she hadn't got a clue.
She wanted some help on the internet, so I showed her - she didn't understand.

The only person who was embarrassed was my wife. This "big" person was down from BKK and was shown up for all the falsity she was.
To hell with the hi-so's.
If her husband is a pilot, do they all have to speak english as the international radio language, if thats the case she should have been able to comprehend more from you surely. Iike yourself, i think my wife would see through her very quickly

kendo,
Thanks for that. I did point out to his wife, through mine, that a pilot was probably able to speak English. Honestly, I'd had about the right amount of beers to ask the question.
The answer - "he dosn't talk to anyone".

That's unfortunate for the wife, probably fortunate for everyone else.

Not in Thailand! Here it is what you HAVE and what you can flaunt. A big ugly SUV with all the chrome trim will do it as well as a huge house decorated and furnished like an Arabian palace. Get your picture into the hi-so sections of the newspapers as often as possible(One of those "kuhnying" hairdos will also signal the world that this woman has servants, etc etc.) I still remember the hi-so Thai woman who gave me a tour of her home and told me - unasked - the price of EVERY stick of furniture in it!

As well this gets into the topic of prejudice which has been touched upon in other forums here. The color of your skin matters here. If you come from Issan it matters here. (Pii-nong springs to mind.)

Accepting people for who they are is possibly a "Western " concept? Certainly the attitude of someone who is "educated" in the best sense of the word. It should certainly be everyone's goal, but I dont think it is a common attitude among Thai people.

Chas, I was speaking for myself. I'm not impressed by things. An asshole with lots of expensive stuff is still an asshole.

Well put johnnyk. I blame the TV for turning their minds into slush. Though what Chas says is how the locals see it, disturbing!

Have to agree. Would also add that my g/f seems to know and accept her 'place' in the pecking order. Every time she would say 'You hi-so, me lo-so', I would beat her to pulp with a pillow. 'Not in this house!' her champion stoutly declares. 'You may wash, clean, scrub, iron, cook, do the garden, take out the trash, clean the car, all in hot-pants... but in THIS house we are equal.'

Poor girl is also under the delusion that I'm a man of means and ability.

'You're kidding. Don't you know I'm a fully paid up member of FILTH?' (Failed in London, Tried Hong Kong) I'm only in Thailand because I no longer have the energy to flog myself to death on the mouse wheel.'

'What mouse wheel?', she queries. I skirt around the subject not wanting to shatter her illusions of western 'success'.

I turn the focus back on her... 'Why do you think like this? You are whatever you want to be.'

Blank expression.

'I not have paper. If you want high in Thailand, have to have paper'.

I come back with 'You don't understand. The most humble roadsweeper makes a far greater contribution to this country and society in general than managers, bankers and educated despoilers of the environment... blah....blah'.

Completely lost now... 'Roadsweeper not have money'.

When she's with other Thais she is clearly funny and gets on well with everyone so I know she's compus mentis. Her English is coming along but not so well that she feels comfortable in the company of other foreigners. If a 'scouse', 'brummie' or 'poxy jock' comes along, forget it.

I think the Thais are no different to, say, the UK, where a poverty of aspiration also exists. I have yet to see the Thais celebrate their ignorance quite as much as we do. But then I don't get out much.

Apologies for any resemblance to members

Image

A quick check of her aspirations... 'What do you want your daughter to be?'

Thinks for a moment... 'Get good job in hotel'.

'That's it?' I ask. 'Why not a president, business leader, scientist, etc...'

Puzzled look. 'Cannot', she comes back. 'Skin too black. Not know people.'

I wasn't aware that teachers in Somtawin, who have good qualifications, get paid 6000 baht a month. One Thai Somtawin teacher we know, applied to Yamsaard and was told no... overqualified. The school would have had to pay her too much.

There are no end to those with IQs above 100 working for those with IQs below 100 who, as has been said, are 'streetsmart'.

Although I may sound out others, I tend to agree with her simple assessment of people.

'Heart good. Heart no good.'

No doubt I'd have to wear sunglasses to ward off the glare!
If you unbutton the shirt though, people can see your massive solid gold zodiac chain much better! :thumb:
