"How reliable is this information"

Not very, but strong in the local rumor mill and when they leveled such a large area I believed it.... ice rink, huh? Wonder how many Thais ice skate?

To the Thai Disney answer, that rumor's still alive and well too, but now its in Cha-Am, not HH.

Why not combine the business models and have a supermarket where you go around the aisles on ice-skates.
Actually someone built an ice-rink in Jakarta whilst I was living there, which I thought madness as you don’t really imagine Indonesians being into winter sports, but it was amazingly popular once it opened.

I just can't help but think any new tourist attraction in HH, will be grossly over priced, just like StarBucks or most retail units in Market Village, last year, me and Linie, AKA mrs Kendo we went bowling with six family members, for one and a half hours, we had a few drinks and some fried pork to nibble on, our bill was nearly 3,000 Baht for half size lane bowling, i was shocked at the price, it is cheaper to go bowling in Southampton, also in Market Village i have perchased some black trousers for my wifes work, 1,300 Baht ouch! the same night went down the night market and got another 3 pairs for 500 Baht.
These prices are just stupid, and who will pay them anyway

Well you for a start.
Been stung once, and once only when we went to buy the trousers we where running out of time so it was just a convieniance, before flying out the next day. :butt:

Not sure how many Ice Rinks there are in Bangkok, but I guess its well in excess of 3.

There is one near my house, and its always very busy, almost exclusiviely Thai people, sop I think the Thias love to ice skate.

My kids also like going there.

If one ever did come to HH, I'm sure we'd use it also.

Not such a strange idea really.

Asians love snow domes, it'd be packed if price is right. They must cost a bit to run.

Haven't been in BigC many times, am I right in thinkingits quite similar to Tescos? If so would they get much business with Tescos and Villa Market in town?

Market Village Pricing

Post by T.I.G.R. »

Good one Miked.......that was good for a huge chuckle....sorry Kendo, but you did open the door.

I keep waiting for a good hamburger joint in Market Village.....I wonder if Wendy's would be interested? I would spend a lot more time at McD or Burger King if they were easier to get to.

Any of you entrepreneurs looking for an easy mark how about a pizza joint or hamburger stand in Cha Am?? I'll be happy to guarantee myself as your first customer!

In Surin we have a Big C, Tesco's, and Macro all next to each other, i like Big C the best good electrical department, and good quality clothes for Thailand, it is by far the busy one out of the three.

Fresh meat and fish i would choose Macro, then Big C, Tesco's freshness not very good. i don't know if it is because of being a long way up north east, it also seems to be slightly more expensive. :D

I like Wendys, best of the fast food (of course in-n-out and white castle are out of all leagues)

T.I.G.R. With a California history, if in-n-out was a favorite, let me know I'll pm you a copycat recipe, when we lived in Maine I used to cook it, my kids liked it better than the original

In and Out Burgers

Post by T.I.G.R. »

Migrant -

We have had In and Out Burger places in Ca. for several years now. They are pretty good but my favorite burger while driving was always a McD quarter pounder because they're a lot neater to eat.

We never had White Castles in California except I saw some in a frozen food section a couple of years ago somewhere. White Castle was legend on the east coast when I was in the Navy in the sixties. Five or six for a dollar and they were very good.

It was my understanding the franchise was sold and part of the deal was the new owners couldn't sell them west of the Mississippi......just a rumor but there must have been some reason we never saw them in the west.

I would love to have your recipe, thanks.

pizza in Cha am

Post by Chas »

TIGR When we lived in on the waterfront in Cha am several years ago, there was a wonderful pizza restaurant. ..also facing the ocean, a block or two to the right when you hit the beach on the main road. They moved to another location in Cha am toward the end of our time there and we never did find them again. Terrific little restaurant and they may still be around the town somewhere.

I agree that a Wendy's would make a nice addition. They tend to have excellent salad bars. White Castles never made it into northern New England though. I only remember them from my student days in Boston.

I still would like to see an Indian restaurant in Market Village.

One of the most amazing things I have ever seen is the indoor ski slope in Dubai. It seemed popular and we got a kick out of the Muslim women in full hijab wearing ski parkas and mittens. The structure is huge and ugly...and from the outside unlike any building you have ever seen. Thai people are fascinated by snow so anything promising even fake snow will prove popular.

There's a good German restaurant on the Soi that goes to the beach closest to Crawford's....and near it is a pizza place that may be the one you are talking about. We haven't eaten there though.....kind of gave up eating out so much in favor of more golf days.

We're not big on Indian, we both like Thai currys better.

For awhile we ate a lot at Veranda and Suan Wean but it eventually just got to be too expensive. There were a couple of good spots in the little village near the Regent Holiday Inn but they've just about been done in by the lack of trade in the past year.

I agree about Market Village, a couple of new restaurants would be great. We seem to have grown tired of just about all of them they have now. I wonder what they're putting on the third floor? Anyone know?

rant?

Post by Chas »

Excuse me, but I don't see any ranting on this thread at all.

It has in fact developed into a very good discussion of what people feel is needed ( or not needed) in this area, what people would like to see here, what the differences are between one area and another and what people have experienced in their lives. . .all connected to restaurants or other businesses.

The conversation here (so far) IMHO has developed naturally and I have found it interesting, informative and amusing.

Well, we do seem to have digressed a bit so here's a couple of comments about the proposed (?) Big C.

1) Living in Cha Am going to Big C in Petchburi is about the same drive as to Market Village so we go sometime to break up the monotony of always going to the same place...also the traffic is much better as it's mostly highway.

2) Continuing the above, a Big C south of the flyway is just about where I wouldn't want it. There's already too much traffic in the south end of town and it's just getting worse. If they do start putting more commercial developments down there I sure hope they'll put the road expansion project back on the front burner!

3) I like the grocery store better at Petchburi Big C than Hua Hin Tesco but much prefer Home Pro for most other kinds of shopping. Actually, since moving to Cha Am we do most of our grocery shopping at the day market.....great fresh meat, fish and veggies at prices much lower than a supermarket. Also the boss has to go there what seems like every other day to get her flowers for Buddha Day!

4) Big C will offer different eating experiences which would be a good thing.

5) There's a rumored Super Store next to the Outlet stores in Cha Am. That would be a great spot for any of the large stores including Big C and or Tesco.

6) Almost forgot we now have Macro and Tesco (soon to open) in Pranburi, pretty close to anyone south of the flyway so a Big C ceertainly could be next....

HOWEVER, going back off topic now, that still leaves a huge void between the end of Hua Hin town center and anywhere north to get a bite in a air conditioned building.......noted because every time the wife and I finish golf we would like to go somewhere other than the golf course for a quick, inexpensive bite and there is pretty much nothing north or south until you get all the way into downtown HH.
