I guess this is just another example of why I like it here in LOS.....
back in Blighty the other kids would pick on them and kick the hell out of them.....here they are accepted as a part of society.
The sign reminds me of that old Kenny Everett character tho

I am sure this is going a bit off topic, but deals with much the same issue. I watched a Thai film here that had english subtitles called Beautiful Boxer. It dealt with much the same issue. It was a very good film and really supprised me that the Thai people were so accepting of people who decide a lifestyle of that sort.
Most other places in the world, those people are made to feel outcasts in society, but from what I saw in the film and after reading BBC Report, that it seems to be accepted as a normal way of life in Thailand.
I would have hate to have to imagine what would have happened if a toilet of that sort was put into our school. People who showed any signs of those sort of tendencies always normally copped bullying and ridicule, but to have your own toilet, it would have been mayhem for them.
For those who have not either see or heard of the film, here is a clip from it below.

I have found for myself that Thais, especially in rural areas, accept this.
My questions are, what consideration have the schools given to the futures of these people and how many are genuine. 20% seems high.
I suspect that many boys see it as a way out when the hear about the riches of Phuket and Pattaya. Of course they will all start out as showgirls. But what happens to the 90% who don't make the grade.
I don't really need an answer for that.
BTW where is Kampang in North East Thailand. I know Kampang Phet in North Central Thailand and Lampang in Northern Thailand.

Guess, I think that Kampang and Lampang are fairly close to Chaing Mai. I know for a fact that Lampang is, and I think that Kampang is actually before Lampang
There is a map here that shows lampang but not the other one

I have just asked my wife these ladyboys do they still have to go into the red and black ball lottery for the army when there 21 years old the answer is yes
Every April all 21 year old men have to go and do this lottery if you pull a red ball you are now in the army for 2 years and 9 months and if you pull a black ball you are a free man, lottery dodgers are thrown in anyway for good mesure.
Even if ladyboys think by having the op this will excuse them from there army duties, WRONG your in there, no high heels and lip stick, head shaved and get these boots on, the rest of the soldiers find this very amusing.

sexuality
For many years I have taught university courses dealing with sexuality and I am a published author with a considerable background in this and related subjects. I interrupt here just to point out a few facts.
Trans sexuality is not a "lifestyle" nor is it, like sexual orientation a matter of individual choice.
As with all humans, any person can decide how to deal with sexual issues of course, but the "sexual direction" if you will, is set very early on in a person's life.
The jury is still out whether this is purely a genetic thing or partly due to the way a child is raised or some combination of the two.
Both homosexuality and trans sexuality occur in every society on earth and in every recorded time period of history. In cultures such as we have here, there is little repression. . so both are much more in evidence than in more sexually repressive cultures.
I do not wish to waylay this forum nor do I wish to introduce these matters in what I sense is not an open or friendly place for such discussions.
As for the Thai Army lottery, I went to one such in a rural area about three years ago. The obvious ladyboys were allowed to keep their shirts on and were excused from having to pick a number very early in the process. I dont know if this is universal, but it is what I saw with my own eyes.
This will be my only post here, but I would be happy to IM anyone interested in further educated discussion.

This topic is a very interesting one.
Could you please post the name of your book(s) so I could order a copy in. I have done some considerable reading on this topic and opinions vary. Doctors write with a different view to other doctors, teachers to other teachers so, even though you have written on this topic Chas and you have considerable background in it and related topics you can't really be 100% sure that you have all the answers right as the topic still holds so many things unanswered. I would be interested to read your 'views' though. ThanksI am a published author with a considerable background in this and related subjects. I interrupt here just to point out a few facts.

I went to the shop next door the other night to get some beer. Huge excitement was taking place. The owner's daughter was putting make-up (far too much!) on a couple of 8/9 year old girls. 'Suay mai?' she said, 'Suay maak' I replied (lying). She then said that one of the 'girls' was in fact a ladyboy. For christ's sake he's only eight!! How does he know? He stood there looking quite ghastly with hair extensions, false eye-lashes, and all the bits. They even had strap-on boobs.
I felt really uncomfortable for two reasons: 1) The pretty little girl looked like a paedophile's dream, and 2) the young little 'boy' looked confused and uncomfortable.
Chas, I guess you know more about this subject than I do, but I really don't believe that a pre-pubescent kid knows whether he/she is a gay/ladyboy/tomboy or whatever.
I'll leave my rant about the ever-increasing ladyboys at the university for another time...
