We have had In and Out Burger places in Ca. for several years now. They are pretty good but my favorite burger while driving was always a McD quarter pounder because they're a lot neater to eat.

This reminds me of the Disneyland rumour.

I had a relative who worked for Disney (and still does) and she checked it out. There was no truth in it whatsoever. The closest was that Disney were looking for franchisees for a park to cater for the rapidly developing East Asian region. Thailand was dismissed as being too expensive and too bureaucratic. The only country seriously considered in the SE Asia region was Malaysia using the island of Borneo.

Canton was the favourite location. The cost was low and the the location being easily accessible from Singapore, Bangkok, Manilla, Tokyo and Seoul and on the doorstep of Hong Kong made anywhere else a non starter.

So who started the rumour and why. Well, the rumour came out the first time that the housing market looked to be in jeopardy in Thailand. I am not sure that anyone would like to live next door to Disneyland but to have it close by would surely make your property more attractive as a holiday home.

Could this be the same for Big C. Maybe, but on the positive side, Big C have announced their growth plan and it involves opening four new stores in 2009 and four in 2010. Eight have, or will be opened, in 2008. Sukhotai is the latest. Some of the locations are smaller than Hua Hin but equally as remote from other Big C stores. Krabi is one example.

Big C say that they have secured the tenancy agreements on all sites for 2009 but do not mention where they are.

According to the Nation they are launching new stores known as mini Big Cs which will be half the size of the larger stores and focus more on in house brands, so my guess is that they will be in the poorer areas of North East and North Central Thailand.

The Big C website is in English and quite informative.

The main question of course is "Will they be selling Heinz Baked Beans?".

Are you serious Guess, I worked in Kalimantan, the Indonesian half of Borneo for a while and there’s sod-all there apart from trees, snakes, the odd orangutan and a few drunken Australian oil workers. It’s not the ideal customer base so I assume they would have had to fly all the customers in from elsewhere.
On the subject of the OP I noticed last month that a new supermarket was being constructed in Nang Rong which possibly might be one of the new mini Big-Cs.

Just an update on the 'Big C' land over the flyover. I was having a beer in a shop opposite while the wife did her rounds of the market. The people there said that it's no more exciting than a car showroom. They said it never was a mystery. So let's wait and see.

Hi there Mrs. Msgartgraves

No tho Corperate Gurus had long time ago lost thier imagination when it comes to chain Names. They let consulting terms do the hard work for them. and came up with Mini Big C. a Name like Small Big C would sound to obvious for some customers. If would have the decision of the New Chain names I would go for Big C lite, Local Big C and Big C to Go!

Sorry for delay STEVE. I have only just noticed this. As I have said in the post, I am only relaying info I got from an employee of Disney.

You are quite right about the Indonesian side and the same applies to 90% of the Malaysian states as well. The remaining 10% though is up for grabs. 20 years ago, when I was working in KL for the Tabung Haji, they were talking about the development of the coastal areas of Sabah for the purpose of tourism.

I have no idea how far down the negotiation route they got but I would think when you look at the costs of building airports, large ferry ports and railway infrastructures it would have ground to a halt.

The Malays are not easily put off by budgetary constraints. If it is the will of Allah it will happen.

However Brunei would have to approve and then there would be issues such as alcohol sales and environmental issues.

We must protect the endangered species such as the forest people (Orang Utan) and the drunken Australians (Veebee Utan).

Anyway as said in the post, it was a consideration only. No such consideration was made public with regards Thailand.

Back to topic, there is a rumor down here that Big C have been snooping around the Thap Sakae area.

There is a little sense in that. You will have the whole Prachuap catchment area south of Hua Hin plus all the new business generated by the new steel reprocessing plant.

But of course a little sense rarely comes into the equation.
