When I came to Thailand to stay I had over a year of planning, one of the things I planned for was to have insurance, I had in mind accident as I had never had any illness in my life and didn’t expect any in the future.
When I got to Huahin I read a copy of the Observer and saw they were an agent for BUPA and went to see them. I took out their minimum policy, Sapphire I think it’s called, cost about 15kb per year, second year they gave me a no claim discount so it was a bit less, third year it had gone up. Then close to the end of the third year I was diagnosed with this problem and out came the policy. Yes I could claim up to 300kb there were certain exclusions but most of what I later found out had to be done was covered.
I had noticed BUPA now had an office in HH out by the airport so went there with the first bills from the Polyclinic for advice. The lady came with me of course and the girl we met there Nong by name couldn’t have been more helpful, she spoke good English and explained everything in understandable terms. One of the things I hadn’t realized was that the 300kb PA was for any one accident or injury that meant if I had 3 accidents and 2 illnesses in a year I could claim up to the 300kb 5 times.
It transpired that most of the private hospitals have an arrangement with BUPA where when you go to pay the insurance card is swiped through a machine connected to BUPA and if they approve the claim (instant) then you don’t have to pay, the money is transferred straight from BUPA to the hospital however if any part of the claim is rejected you will have to pay that, for instance I had a CT scan at Petcharat total cost 10,300b the 10k was for the scan and the 300b for other incidentals BUPA paid the 10K on the spot and all I had to pay was the 300.
We are now in BKK getting treatment and dealing with the BKK office, before we went Nong told us if we have any problems at all give her a call, we have done this a couple of times and she has even called us to ask how the treatment is going and are we getting good service from BKK office.
When I read how some people are getting poor service and getting ripped off by tradesmen and such and how this is a inherent Thai thing I think “You lot are dealing with the wrong people”.
We couldn’t be happier with the service we have received from BUPA and I will recommend them without reservation. There may be cheaper policies around but when something goes wrong that’s when it really counts
So if you are in HH and want insurance go see Nong and the girls

It makes a change to read a good news post - unfortunately good experiences with a variety of companies in Thailand seem to be a bit thin on the ground these days.
Obviously needing treatment is not good news - but the reassurance of getting it without hassle, being listened to and treated well must take a lot of potential stress out of the situation

Sorry to hear about your problems Robbie and hope you are soon well again, but you are right, people almost expect accidents to happen in LOS rather than other illness, so it's tempting not to bother with insurance at all.
Do you know though if the BUPA agent in HH will provide the same cover for short term? i.e. one or two months only?
Agents here in the UK tend to only provide cover for either the full trip - including baggage, flight cancellation etc, or apply a minimum period of cover which is much longer than I need (and overlaps with free 45 day cover provided by my bank anyway!)
Would appreciate more info or a contact E address if you can manage it. Cheers

Dont know about short term policy but they are a world wide company. I called when I went to Cambodia and asked if I was covered they told me no problem but take claim forms with me as hospitals there (assuming they have them) may not have forms.
Have a look in your phone book they may have a branch near you
