Time left on passport

Post by niggle »

Read somewhere that if doing a visa extension of 1 year, you must have 18 months left on passport - anyone heard of this before ?
Also how soon before expiry of visa can you apply for extension ?

I believe that time scale on your passport is correct. Basically, the year of your extension, plus another 6 month's validity. I'm not sure how strictly it's enforced, but better safe than sorry.
Imm normally like an extension application to be made within the last 30 days of any entry stamp. You're likely to be told that you're too early if you go say 6 weeks before, but you're best having some time to sort out any problems/missing paperwork if that happens.
If you've got a multiple entry type visa, it's not necessary for it to be expiring before you apply. The entry stamp is the important factor.

My retirement visa expires Sept 14. You can renew a month early. At least in Pattaya you can. This will be my 3rd one, I'm hoping for no problems but my passport does expire Feb 09. which I had planed on doing in Bangkok.

any one hear of problems getting a passport renewed early?? If it comes to that.

I have heard this too but I think it is one of the many rules/guidelines that are at the discretion of the immigration officer.

The sure way is to get down to the office and check in advance. Ideally get them to put a note on your passport for the next officer who deals with your extension.

Sargeant says he has done it so it can be done if they want. It never does any harm to drop the officer a beer voucher for helping if rules are being waived.

Imm. office is situated in the very end of Soi 102.
Follow the signs and tracks due west.
You can't miss it.

Come on Norseman that is a bit misleading. Soi 102 goes a long way further than the turn off to the Immigration office. The first thing you need to find is the turn into Soi 102! As a marker there is a public telephone box just near the entrance to Soi 102.

The right turn off 102 to the immigration goat track is ABOUT 2 kms from Petchkasem Rd. If the signs have been nicked, then it will be very difficult for a first timer to find.

Glad to hear some have had successful extensions with less than the 'official' requirement for passport expiry, I'll report on my findings in a few weeks.

For those that don't know where it is, click the 'Hua Hin Immigration' link in the menu on the Hua Hin Map

Yes Nereus I do agree that the navigation can be some sort of tricky to a newcomer, but not impossible if you do your homework before you go.

Update: from the US embassy in Bangkok.

Sure you can renew your passport early. Please some in to apply and be sure to bring with you two passport size photos on white background and your current passport .

Cheers,

Was trying to find a bit more on passport validity this morning. I can't see anything on an official site, but did come up with this from a Phuket site:
http://www.phuket.net/visit-phuket/tips ... t-visa.htm
Evidently, this "requirement" does not seem to be strictly enforced.
