Changing face of Thai's

It seems to me that to be a successful actor or model in Thailand you need to be of mixed race. Thai/Western. All advertising billboards and Thai soapys and Pop singers are full of the mixed Thai. Where do you see a traditional Thai advertising a product or acting on TV or signing on stage ? The tradional face of many nationalities are changing however that is mainly because of immigration forced upon them. Thai's are always telling me to have a child with my Thai wife and get rich. Not sure what the tradional Thai will look like in a few generations time.

It is not just Thailand though. The opening ceremonies of the Olympics had many faces that were not typical Chinese. Most African countries use mixed race models as they do in the Caribbean.

I have noticed the trend in Japan, Malaysia and many of the Southern European counties.

On difference with Thailand is that the white European races, Arabs, Indians and Chinese have been visiting and inter marrying in the area for centuries so you get a whole range of racial types.

I think we are still millennia away from a global common race but it will probably happen eventually.

Being a lighter colour also indicates wealth, for instance working in an office, not the Farm.

Thats why all office/uni Girls walk around covering their faces with their Magazines or whatever else comes to hand.

Whitener is the no1 selling beauty product I believe.

It is interesting though what 40 years +- does to a place. Back then mixed race babies * born to Thai Mothers were being 'disposed' of more often than not. The 'luk krung' craze has really only caught on over the past 20 years or so. Pete

unfortunately for the PRC govt mate all those "ethnic" Chinese kids were later found to be all Han Chinese child actors chosen for their non Han looks

.....so basically all drawn from the 90% of the population ...

not ethnic at all....

a bit like the Brits using all white kids to represent all ethnic minorities in the UK.....

...particularly insulting to Tibetan and Uighur minorities......

there mixed race kids are really screwed.....they may get on TV but no Japanese wants to marry them..... they are hated more than Gaijin (farangs). In school; they get the crap kicked out of them by "pure blood" Japanese kids..... as my mates kids will attest to. They both pay private tutors to home school their kids now.

Koreans, due to the occupation by Japan, are very prejudiced to the Japanese. My ex-mother in law lived through the occupation and it was interesting to hear what she went through.

Most Koreans I've met here, and in Korea, loved the mixed white/Korean.

But as hhfarang mentioned, kids can be brutal.

Yes the kids thing is something else.

Interesting comment on the Korean viewpoint. I have seen some recent N. Korean smuggled video interviews and they are, of course, all pro western.

However the OP was only talking about the looks of a person rather than their real racial origin.

As I said before, many countries in the east including Japan and Korea use western looking models no matter what their true blood line actually is. In Thailand they have the luxury of having many people, both male and female who really do have caucasian blood so they have a larger selection to pick from.

The looks fashion is also evident in the fickle UK teenage, young lady, mag market. Traditionally blond Swedish looking ladies have been fashionable even though they account for a very small percentage of the UK population especially in the south.

It only takes someone like Beyonce Knowles, Penelope Cruz or Jennifer Lopez to suddenly, overnight make dark skin and complexion the current fashion.

It is not only the ladies that are influenced. The Beatles and later the Sex Pistols changed the hairstyle of just about every male int the UK for at least two decades.

In the east the fashions die a bit harder. The fashion seems to be to look like a westerner.
