Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
The MG4 electric gets a good review from Top Gear and it's a lot cheaper to buy in Thailand than in the UK:

Though surely still much cheaper to buy a petrol version of the same EV?STEVE G wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 4:33 pm The MG4 electric gets a good review from Top Gear and it's a lot cheaper to buy in Thailand than in the UK:

The MG4 is an electric only model - you can only compare it to a “similar” type vehicle with a petrol engine!!2/cb wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 2:11 amThough surely still much cheaper to buy a petrol version of the same EV?STEVE G wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 4:33 pm The MG4 electric gets a good review from Top Gear and it's a lot cheaper to buy in Thailand than in the UK:

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Yes, you're missing something. As stated, need to compare like vehicles in same class.
Also consider the cost savings of charging vs petrol, and lack of those oil changes & tune ups. On just petrol savings, it adds up quick over the life of the battery warranty, 8yrs.
For us, we owned the MG ZS ICE for 2 yrs, and put on 39k, which is our average of about 20k a year. Now have the EV version of the ZS, for a few months, and average 360 kms per full charge. That's at <60 kph locally & 90 kph over the road.
Using that against the ICE's version, a thirsty 10 kp/L and it's easy to see the savings. 8yrs X 20k = 160kms. Compare exact same cars, and buy in cost for us were:
ZS ICE - ฿695
ZS EV - ฿949
EV ROI vs ICE (MG ZS) ... @ ฿250k cost. 8yrs X 20k kms = 160k kms
160k kms = ฿576k for petrol @ 10km/L @ ฿36/L, so ROI for us should be rather quick. Half of those kms locally, and charged up with excess solar at the house, so basically free.
At worst, your most expensive top up, still saves ~฿1000 every 360 kms
160k kms ÷ 360 = ~฿444k saved over petrol cost, at today's petrol price.
All the current MGs, batteries are about the same, ~50kWh so kms per charge, should be about the same. We drive in 'ECO' mode, and performs more than enough (damn peppy), with marginal difference between modes (eco, normal, sport). KERS set at #3, regeneration, kWh recovered when slowing.

An interesting article regarding hydrogen fuelled engines as an alternative to EV’s!!

Whilst it might have some industrial applications, hydrogen internal combustion engines have very poor efficiency compared with electric vehicles.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 1:06 pm An interesting article regarding hydrogen fuelled engines as an alternative to EV’s!!

If the end goal is to power transport with renewable energy, you would need something like four times as much of it to use hydrogen instead of pure electric, that's why the major car companies have pretty much given up on the idea.

But that is an electric car, it's just using a hydrogen fuel cell instead of a battery for the electricity, it doesn't have an internal combustion engine.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 2:33 pmMaybe not all of them!!STEVE G wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 2:11 pmWhilst it might have some industrial applications, hydrogen internal combustion engines have very poor efficiency compared with electric vehicles.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 1:06 pm An interesting article regarding hydrogen fuelled engines as an alternative to EV’s!!

Ok I didn’t realise you were talking just about ice cars fuelled by hydrogen and yes I’d agree that (at the moment) they’re not suitable for use in small vehicles but with the passage of time who knows what might be developed - the more that companies like BMW invest in alternative fuelled vehicles the greater the chance of solutions that currently don’t exist.STEVE G wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 3:34 pmBut that is an electric car, it's just using a hydrogen fuel cell instead of a battery for the electricity, it doesn't have an internal combustion engine.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 2:33 pmMaybe not all of them!!STEVE G wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 2:11 pm

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
EVs cost substantially more than the equivalent petrol variant, are severely range-limited, depreciate like falling masonry, and catch fire much too often. What’s not to like?
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
It's the future. It's also the only growth sector of the automotive industry, investing in the production of internal combustion engined cars is like investing in horse feed in 1910.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
It obviously depends on which country you’re talking about - Thailand doesn’t suffer winter temperature drops like they do in many other countries - this UK article reflects the drop in range of EV’s in the winter.

Depends on the market - here’s an example of prices of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full EV of the Kia Kona in the UK - there’s quite a price differential!!
