Spiked drinks are by and large, non-existent. Sure you read about such things in all those fanciful Bangkok novels, but in real life, it very rarely happens. I'm married now and well behaved, but i haven't always been this way, and as a crazy idiot visiting LOS the first few times, I've found myself in some of the shadiest places you could hope to imagine, and even so, I've never had a drink spiked.


Close friends have been over to visit, and their drinks have been spiked, or so I've been told, and I told them what I'm about to tell you.........you're dreaming. Come on fella.....why spike your drink but not the drink of your partner? Just think about it for a minute.


Don't beat yourself up over it. Many of us have been there, but most of us were willing to acknowledge that we only had ourselves to blame.


I've heard similar tales about the full moon parties, but I've been to them heaps of times and they are nothing like you read about. Everyone is not high on drugs, and people are not making love on the beach. Maybe 20 years ago, but not anymore. Very noisy, and a very mixed crowd, but all in all, you can have a wilder night out in any UK city.


The moral of the story................if you can't handle a night out, stay home and watch TV.

The Phuket Gazette reported of spiked drinks at least twice in the last few weeks whereby the girls were caught, had confessed and were put on display with the drug cocktails they carried around in front of them.
I personally know of one guy who died after being drugged with sleeping pills (in Hua Hin, but almost 20 years ago, other forum member might remember).
Last year I had to bring guests of the hotel where I worked back then in the middle of the night to the hospital. He was sort of alright after a while but she had to stay overnight and it looked nasty as foam kept coming from her mouth for a long time. Without me suggesting anything the doctor told me that it was a typical symptom of drugging with sleeping pills and unfortunately he said it happened quite regularly.

While absolutely agree with you about spiked drinks, full moon parties are pretty much EXACTLY what you read about. It's what sells. Nobody goes there to remain not under the influence of something and everything you want to get, is there.

Last one I went to 3 years ago(My last one by the way, I have been to 5 all told), a guy OD'd and drowned in the surf. 2 women got raped(Oddly enough foreigner women) and there were dozens of arrest for people fighting and drugs. I mean come on you walk along the beach and see beach kiosk after beach kiosk selling "F##k Buckets". I saw more people staggering drunk and puking then I care to remember. Now if you visit the party early and leave before 10 then maybe it is sedate but people party all night and it does not get rolling until late.

Just over a year ago the BP ran an article on the full moon parties - and the cheap liquor sold in the buckets. I think we discussed it on here somewhere at the time....According to that article there are (or were then) many more deaths at the parties than were widely reported. No surprise there. As we all know many tourist/expat accidents and deaths go unreported elsewhere.
The BP had interviewed vendors who sell bucket at the parties. Obviously to sell for 100 baht in that volume very cheap liquor is used. LaoKhao standard or below, and possibly moonshined therefore uncontrolled. The vendors agreed that deaths were sad - but wouldn't stop selling the stuff because of the demand (and no doubt because of their profits.) A case of mai pen lai.

Over the years there have been a number of instances in HH where a farang has died under, what I am sure would normally be termed as suspicious circumstances and more than likely some of them involved spike drinks, probably administered in their apartment or hotel, rather than a bar.
The authorities here are pretty good at covering up such incidents.

Agreed Dozer - unfortunately the authorities are pretty good at not seeing the point of thorough autopsies and investigations in many cases of farang deaths. A ChiangMai hotel springs to mind - and also the Phuket air crash. Only persistance by families and authorities back home helped to get answers in those particular cases.
But it's maybe not so much deliberate 'covering up' as simply an acceptance of Buddhas' will which we farang will never get to grips with.

^Those are all the realities of Full Moon Parties, minimal police, loud music, Lao Khao, Ya Dong and local "Special" herbal mixes. The age group is primarily younger, they excessively drink(Like a college Frat house party) a great number mix drugs and booze and the concoction can be deadly. Reporting this kind of death is bad for business. Now when I talk about "Full Moon Parties", I am talking about the major ones on big beaches, open audiences. I have been to a few semi private deals and those are more sedate and drinks are ordered and served and while drugs were still present I suspect, the crowd never got out of hand.

I love a good party and still go to them today. While my excessive behavior has been reeled in a bit, I still drink it up. But I bring my own and know whats in it....

Honestly, I think a great majority is just that. Thais, as do many SE Asian countries, look at death way different then westerners in virtually all aspects. In the US we do all the processing so others can point blame and lawyers can decided who to sue(if applicable)

Here they look at it, you died. Its the will of life and they move on. If you drank yourself to death or topped yourself, its done, move on.

Well after reading all of this. I will def put Romantic Bar on my list of places to visit when I am there later this year. So much publicity it will be safe as houses. US I liked your response and the fact that you care.
Date rape drug and others exist and are used very commonly all over the world. HH and full moon parties will be no exception. I do take the point that the cheap moonshine may cause more havoc than the drugs. As a former Lab Chemist I would not drink moonshine, other than a small taste, without performing a full chemical analysis on it.

Drink spiking is definatly on the rise , one of my work colleages here in singapore took a thai girl from the 4 floors back to his hotel they had a drink and the next thing he remembers is waking up 14 hours later his works lap top , iphone and all of his cash gone , she had left the credit cards, she even had time to scrape all of the identifying stickers of the laptop
He went to the police and they have her on CCTV coming in with him to the hotel and leaving sometime later. that was last week he still has not heard if they have found her.
So it is happening and this was in super safe Singapore.

On the topic of full moon parties.................I have been to quite a few myself and have never been offered any type of drug. I'm not saying it doesn't happen because I know all to well that it does, but I also think the media blow it out of proportion a bit. Also, each time I have been we stayed until daybreak, and yes there were some fights, but considering the amount of people there, and the sheer diversity of the people, I don't think fighting was excessive. One see more brawls on Union Street in Aberdeen most nights.

As for the buckets..................I must have had my head up my ass because if you ask me, most buckets are made using Sangsom, and I know ours were, since we mixed them ourselves.


I stand by my verdict.........the full moon parties are a great night out, even at my age.

Well according to the police spiking and drugging is rife in HH

Lunched with a friend today who got hit yesterday

Met a girl in the Grand market last night and dined with her at a market stall. Ordered mussels and she proceeded to feed him. After 3 he felt dizzy so went back to his hotel close by to rest. Woke this morning with 1200 pounds sterling missing but 1000 US$ T'chqs untouched. Girl apparently told the reception desk she needed to go out and get Viagra and never returned. He was apparently seen wandering around soi 80 stark naked at 10pm and midnight

Informed police today who furnished a report and said they handled at least 10 similar complaints a day. That is the third friend who has been drugged and mugged in HH in the past 12 months.

This latest friend was stupid enough not to open a bank account and stash his sterling and T/chqs there. He's been residing in a mediocre hotel with all that cash in a drawer. One born every minute
