football

Post by redzonerocker »

i was enjoying that little spat between caller & baabaa :( :D
it's great that during the 90 minutes of international football, we're all united (most of the time) with allegiances put aside temporarily.
if somebody cocks up, he's not a useless english twat but a 'whatever' club twat!!

on the subject of johnson, yes theres a bit of a witchhunt & the press do go overboard with some of their comments.
you only have to read some of their weekly match reports.
sometimes you have to wonder whether they were actually at the game or maybe they just don't really know much about football, probably having never played the game :? :|

getting :offtopic:
it was a terrific performance against a decent side (who are ranked in the world top ten !)
with the current squad, plus the return of players like j cole, walcott & ferdinand & the possible emergence of a couple of the younger fringe players, i think we will go to south africa as serious contenders.

yes we've gone to previous tournaments with good quality teams, but never have we gone with a squad that has so much quality in depth.

I was reading a West Ham forum a couple of days ago, and one thread got started regarding how Hammers fans felt about the idea (the poster actually called it the 'nightmare scenario') of John Terry being the first Englishman since Bobby Moore to lift the World Cup, and having the same iconic status along with, say Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole; it caused a couple of distinct reactions, which were to either hope England don't win it because of that (or that Terry and Lampard get yellow/red cards so they can't play in the Final), or probably the majority who said that it didn't matter who was playing they would support England and want them to win.

It is well known on here that I despise Terry and feel that he is an awful role model and should never even be in the England squad let alone be captain, and I have to say that for the first time in my life I am actually thinking I don't want England to win the World Cup, purely because of him; Lampard and Cole (A) aren't much better, and to be fair the England team is littered with players who while exceptionally talented on the field appear to be horrible people - Gerrard and Rooney, for example. Maybe it is just a trait of modern day footballers, or is it that we just 'know' more about them in this information age? Maybe all the old players from the seventies and before were the same but we just didn't hear about them as much? I am sure the Chelsea fans on here will leap to the defence of Terry et al but this isn't really about club loyalties or ability, it is about whether these people are fit to represent their country as people - do we really want the English to be judged by their behaviour and personalities? Or is winning everything, regardless?

Good reading WL

I agree that some are dumb louts who can't handle pulicity, behave properly when off the park but we are never going to get a teem full of Bobby Chartons, Beckams or Ryan Giggs.

The way sport has gone over the past few years is it is driven by money. Greed takes over. Club loyalty goes down the tubes. Overpayed players dont give two hoots about their club or country. They only care about having a ball (pun intended) and dont even think about the role model tag

Think we have to accept it. If we like a sport and appreciate the skills and tactical aspects of the game I guess we should blinker ourselves into forgetting about their yobo antics off the field
RICHARD OF LOXLEY

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

Out of interest, do you guys in LOS get to see England's match live today?

It's only available via the Internet (1 million viewers) or at selected Odeon Cinemas here in the UK. I don't know of anybody who has been daft enough to waste their money.

Highlights now on the beeb at 22.15.

I will watch to see if the Ferdinand f**k-up is as bad as described on 5-live which I was listening to. Green and Lennon, not to mention the Boss must be loving him!

A bad time for this guys form to be going AWOL.

As far as I'm concerned, today was a non-event. If they want to play stupid games by making it internet or cinema only, then I for one have no interest in today's game. I will not be watching highlights or anything else.

I will not play their stupid games :cuss:

Nearly an hour on the beeb and often you gain more in defeat.....

Ferdinand is a mess, Cole screwed up for the goal (but is probably the best defender anywhere on current form) and apart from that, with 10 men, we did okay. With 11 we would have beaten them, I have no doubt.

James will be Englands keeper and Johnson right wing, but if he's going to do that, we need a right backm but if Lennon plays? Gerrard got injured, Rooney was inspired and Captain reliable was.

So, we need Lamps and Gerrard on top form, the back four will be, but who will fill the gaps?

Hey?

He might be good going forward but there's a world of difference between playing on the wing and playing rightback.

Shame England haven't got a massively underrated right winger by the name of Dirk aint it?
