https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-with-dad

A big-bike riding riot policeman facing multiple charges after killing a doctor on a zebra crossing left the monkhood with his father after attending the victim's cremation on Wednesday.

Pol L/Cpl Norawich Buadok and his father, Pol Sub Lt Nikom, returned to being laymen at a ceremony at Wat Pariwat Ratchasongkram in Yannawa district of Bangkok.

The pair disrobed on their return to Wat Pariwat after attending the royally-sponsored cremation of Waraluck Supawatjariyakul, an ophthalmologist in the faculty of medicine at Chulalongkorn University, at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat in Bang Khen district.

Officer who killed doctor faces another charge

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... her-charge

Police will press a fresh charge of driving over the speed limit against a junior crowd control officer who killed a doctor on a zebra crossing.

An investigation found that the Ducati motorcycle driven by Pol L/Cpl Norawich Buadok was travelling between 108 and 128 kilometres per hour when it struck ophthalmologist Waraluck Supawatjariyakul on Jan 21.

The additional charge would bring to eight the total number faced by the officer, said Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) spokesman Pol Maj Gen Jirasant Kaewsaeng-ek. The other charges are:

Reckless driving causing death
Using a vehicle without a licence plate
Failing to keep his motorcycle in the left lane
Failing to give way to someone using a pedestrian crossing
Using a vehicle with unpaid annual registration tax
Using a vehicle that lacked required equipment
Not having third-party vehicle insurance.

Train crew killed by railway crossing truck collision

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -collision

UDON THANI: The train driver and the engineer were killed when their train hit an 18-wheel trailer truck at a railway crossing in Muang district of this northeastern province on Monday night, police said.

The accident occurred at the crossing near Ban Chan intersection in Muang district. Rapid train No134 (Nong Khai-Bangkok) hit the truck about 7.45pm, Pol Capt Narasak Nonthabut, a Muang duty officer, said.

The violent impact derailed the locomotive, which sustained heavy damage. The truck tractor was not damaged. The train hit the trailer, which was torn free from its coupling and hurled into the canal beside the tracks.

Wuthichai Ruang-aram, the train driver, and Jennarong Chuenchoy, the train engineer, were both killed, ripped out of the cabin and into the canal by the impact.

There were about 100 passengers in the train's nine cars. Some received minor injuries.

Trailer truck driver Surachai Wongsuk, 58, said he was taking a load of cassava chips from Bung Kan province to Prachin Buri.

He did not stop at the crossing, but drove over it because the safety barrier arm was not down. The truck was halfway across when he heard a train warning klaxon and then felt a huge impact as it crashed into the trailer and tore it from the mounting.

Mr Surachai was adamant the safety barrier was not down across the road. If it was, he would have stopped, he said.

Police were investigating who was to blame, whether a railway employee had failed to lower the safety barrier.

Geez, how the hell can this happen:

Disconnected trailer kills 3 in head-on collision

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -collision

CHAIYAPHUM: Three elderly people in a pickup were killed when an 22-wheeler's trailer broke loose on a curve, hurtled over the median strip and smashed into their truck.

The deadly accident happened on Highway 2054 in tambon Huai Yang of Khon Sawan late Thursday night.

Three people from Kaeng Khro district travelling the front seat of their silver Ford pickup truck were immediately crushed to death. They were Prasong Nomyaso, 62, Bualong Aksornsuea, 86, and Somkhuan Pada, 70. Two passengers travelling on the back were injured.

One the injured passengers said they were returning home after going fishing.

Police and emergency responders called to the scene found the disconnected trailer overturned on the road near a curve in the highway. The truck tractor, registered in Nakhon Patom province, was parked about 500 metres away. Its 33-year-old driver, Thongchai Khiannok, was waiting for the police.

Pol Capt Sommat Deemul, from Chong Sam Mor station, said the driver confirmed his 22-wheel trailer truck lost its trailer at the curve and caused the fatal accident.

Train hits trailer truck on railway crossing

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... y-crossing

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A backhoe fell from a trailer onto a following pickup when a 22-wheel truck was hit by a train at a railway crossing in Wiang Sa district on Sunday evening, but there were no casualties, police said.

The accident occurred about 6.10pm at the crossing in front of Phru Krachaeng village in tambon Ban Song, about 10 minutes after express train No 86 (Nakhon Si Thammarat - Bangkok) went past Phru Krachaeng railway station.

The train rammed into the middle of the trailer truck, which was carrying a backhoe on the back.

The violent impact sent the backhoe off the trailer and onto a four-door Toyota pickup immediately beind the truck. It sustained heavy damage but nobody inside was hurt. The train locomotive was slightly damaged.

Police said the safety bar at the railway crossing was found to have been lowered and the red light signal still on.

The investigation was continuing.

Just spent a few days highway driving down south and back, and every hour or so we saw one of these siplors or larger lorries upside down in the ditch in the middle. They have to be the most dangerous drivers on the highways by far. There are literally too many accidents every day to report in the news!

Interestingly, there were very few inter-provincial busses spotted due to reduced routes and lack of traveling so bus crashes must have fallen which is a plus.

Maybe down South, but they are quite prominent on the route Bangkok to Hua Hin, and they still hog the right hand lane making it difficult/dangerous to get past them. As you know, I travel to Ratchaburi a fair bit. Last Wednesday night, there were so many, it must have added 15 minutes to my journey.

 Maybe you were travelling during the day. These beasts tend to come out after dark.

Yep, all day time driving. I avoid Thai roads at night when driving is akin to playing a very bad video game where you only have one life!

During the day you have to grapple with the siplors hogging the outside doing 50kph which is probably what causes most of the accidents.

Family files B72m suit against police over pedestrian's death

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ians-death

The parents of the doctor killed by a police motorcyclist on a zebra crossing in Bangkok have filed a 72-million-baht lawsuit against the Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO) and the junior officer who hit her last month.

Anirut Supawatjariyakul and his wife Ratchanee, the parents of ophthalmologist Waraluck Supawatjariyakul, and their lawyer on Thursday filed suit in the Civil Court against the RTPO and Pol L/Cpl Norawich Buadok of the Protection and Crowd Control Divison’s sub-division 1.

Pol L/Cpl Norawich was driving the Ducati that hit and killed Waraluck on a pedestrian crossing on Phaya Thai Road in Ratchathewi district on Jan 21.

Lawyer Natthaphol Nichawong said they were suing the RTPO, as first defendant, and Pol L/Cpl Norawich, as second defendant, for violation of rights, and demanding compensation of 72 million baht plus interest from the date of the violation. The amount was for funeral rites and compensation for the family’s loss of their daughter.

The lawyer said the Civil Court would consider whether to accept the suit or not. The court set April 20 for discussion of issues in the suit. The defendants must show up at the court that day, Mr Natthaphol said.

“The amount of damage has been evaluated from several factors, including the potential of Mor Kratai (Waraluck’s nickname) and how she, if still alive, would have contributed to the country and support of her parents.

"If she had worked until retirement, she would have earned around 300 million baht and would have paid at least 30 million baht in tax to the state. Academic and university lecturers jointly evaluated the damage," the lawyer said.

Asked by a reporter what the family could do if the policeman was unable to pay the demanded damages, Mr Natthaphol said the lawsuit named the officer's employer first defendant as a guarantee of payment of damages.

If the court found against either or both defendants, the family would receive compensation, he said.

Even if Pol L/Cpl Norawich could not afford compensation and the RTPO argued the incident was a personal matter, there was a link to performance of duty. Immediately before the crash, Pol L/Cpl had delivered important documents to the Metropolitan Police Bureau. The accident occurred not far from the bureau after he left there. It was a working day and during working hours, he said.

On top of this, the suit also took into consideration the issue of police management of safety on zebra crossings, which were the site of frequent accidents but no measures were ever taken to solve the problem.

The victim's father, Dr Anirut, who is also an ophthalmologist, said no amount of damages could compensate them for their daughter's loss of life. The figures were an assessment, but the psychological damage could not be assessed, he said.

The family's lawyer said they would file another suit with the Administrative Court against the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and two of its agencies - the Traffic and Transportation Office and the Road Safety Centre - for negligence in safety management over use of pedestrian crossings and demand the same amount of compensation, 72 million baht.

Waraluck’s parents, their lawyer and a group of law students from Chulalongkorn University and Ramkhamhaeng University were later reported to have arrived at the Administrative Court and filed their lawsuit.

The family's suit against the BMA and the two agencies cites negligence in failing to put up traffic signs telling vehicles to stop for pedestrians crossing the road or to slow down on approaching the crossing where the fatal accident occurred. They are also accused of failing to strictly enforce traffic rules in the area.

On Feb 1, police investigators filed two additional traffic charges against Pol L/Cpl Norawich, - speeding in an 80kph zone and unsafe driving - raising the counts against him to nine. The other charges included reckless driving causing death, using a vehicle without a licence plate and failing to give way to someone using a pedestrian crossing.

One killed, 17 hurt in pickup truck crash in Chai Nat

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... n-chai-nat

A woman was killed and 17 other people injured when a pickup truck carrying migrant workers crashed into another pickup truck carrying likay performers in Chai Nat province in the early hours of Saturday.

The crash occurred at Khung Samphao intersection on Phaholyothin Road in Manorom district around 2am, Thai media reported.

Police and rescuers rushed to the scene and found a Toyota pickup truck with Kamphaeng Phet licence plates. The impact of the crash ripped off its roof and scattered the victims' belongings.

The driver had fled, while two passengers, who were Myanmar nationals, tried to flee but were caught by police.

A red Toyota pickup truck with Bangkok licence plates was found in a roadside ditch near the crash site. The left section of the vehicle was badly damaged.

A body of a dead woman was inside the vehicle. The victim was later identified as Anu Bualuang, 56. Prachaya Bualuang, 31, was the driver of the red pickup truck and the victim’s son.

A total of 16 people were injured in the crash, including 13 Myanmar migrant workers. All were taken to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured migrants tested positive for Covid-19.

According to a police investigation, the red pickup truck was carrying performers of the Sornram Nampetch troupe, a popular likay troupe in the country. Mr Prachaya and one of the performers were seen crying and hugging the body of his mother.

He told investigators that his troupe was on the way to return to Ayutthaya province after performing a show at Wat Nong Khunchart in Uthai Thai province. There were four people inside his pickup truck, including his mother, who sat in the back seat.

His vehicle was hit by the pickup truck that ran a red light at Khung Samphao intersection. The force of the crash caused his vehicle to plunge into the roadside ditch, said Mr Prachya.

Police were investigating and tracking down the driver of another pickup truck.

Really, or an insurance scam? Unfortunate how this place has made me think. Do Jaguars come with a diesel option?

Jaguar car explodes into flames on Bangkok expressway

https://thethaiger.com/news/national/ja ... expressway

Bangkok police are investigating why a black Jaguar car exploded into flames on the Charlerm Maha Nakhon Expressway last night. The driver and passengers escaped and weren’t physically hurt, but they were traumatised. The driver said they smelled diesel fumes, then saw smoke, and then the car lit on fire. He said he didn’t leave the car in any suspicious places, and others hadn’t driven it.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand towed the little that remained of the burnt luxury car to an expressway police station. The driver will meet with police today as they investigate the mysterious fire. The Thai traffic and safety news radio station FM91 Trafficpro posted a video about the incident on their Youtube channel. The video is about two minutes long, and shows firefighters hosing down the scorched remains. The roof and sides of the car are completely gone, and only the back looks unscathed. The front is reduced to rubble with wheels.

Yes, since 2017. May have been a problem with Adblue / DEF system, although some of the Jaguar/ Land Rover diesels have been imported here sans the DEF system.

Public bus hits motorbike stopped for pedestrians at zebra crossing in Bangkok

https://thethaiger.com/news/national/pu ... in-bangkok

A motorbike driver who stopped at a zebra crossing to yield pedestrians the right of way was hit from behind by an oncoming public bus. Thais on social media have been sharing a CCTV video clip of the accident. Pedestrian safety has been in the spotlight in Thailand after the fatal accident last month where a police officer sped and crashed his Ducati motorcycle into an eye doctor, killing her.

On Valentine’s Day, the 37 year old motorbike driver was headed to work when he saw two pedestrians walking on the crosswalk by Paolo Hospital in Bangkok’s Saphan Kwai area and slowed his bike down. Other cars also slowed down and stopped at the crosswalk. A public bus then hit the motorbike driver from behind. The motorbike driver was rushed to the hospital and is in serious condition with back injuries.

Reports in Thai media say the driver from bus No. 29 Hua Lumphong to Rangsit insisted that he tried to stop but couldn’t do so in time, but those who have seen the video say the driver did not appear to even attempt to stop. The driver is now charged with reckless driving causing injury.

His girlfriend also told Thai media that the public bus company and driver haven’t contacted them or shown any responsibility for what had happened, adding that her boyfriend is the only one working to support the family. The girlfriend also told reporters that her boyfriend is always strict with the traffic rules and measures, and he always stops for the pedestrians who cross the road.

The bus driver says the insurance company would pay the compensation. According to the report, the compensation will be discussed at a later time.
