Re: Thai people hate us when we don't pay for their services
Hi everyone.
I would just like to add my experience of Thailand , if I may.
Im nowhere near as experienced as most of you people, but ive always been surprised and happy at the amount of respect and friendship ive received from Thais when ive visited.
A couple of our Thai friends have gone out of their way to help us and show us around, they've paid for things for us, even though we've offered and tried to pay for them ourselves (a point of pride, I guess).
My experience has been one of respect and friendship from the Thai people and I would like to think we've reciprocated.
I would think most loyal nationals around the world might consider their country to be the best, weather they be English, American, Spanish or Thai.
Im not trying to argue with anyone, just put my experience forward.
Ive travelled a little and have been lucky enough to visit some truly beautiful countries, but for me, the people make the country and if you have the right mix of people, then the experience of visiting/living in a particular place can be very pleasing.
Of course you get 'bad apples' as you do anywhere in the world. The trick is to avoid them if possible and if not move past them as quickly as possible, I think.
Everyone has their own opinion, but my way of thinking is: Thailand is like a big club, im not a member (being a farang), so to access the nice things the club has to offer I must pay a surcharge, that the members dont have to pay (them being Thai nationals).
This may seem naive and a lot of you may have different opinions, but this is my approach to the subject of paying over the odds. I obviously try to barter them down, but know that I will always pay more than a Thai.

I would agree with Traveller 2, I have lived in the Middle East (UAE) for the best part of 13 years and know full well the story about expats paying more. The expats pay more of electricity probably to subside the emiratis who don't have to pay the full whack, we pay more for everything in particular, so imho I really think that anyone who complains about paying that little bit extra over and above the nationals, really has not lived an expat life in a different country from their own. It's the norm, so get over it!
