If you can get fresh Red Snapper it's not a bad substitute

Might give it another try, though, if we can find it.

I had fish & chips at the Buffalo Tavern yesterday evening. Authentic presentation (wrapped in newspaper). I tasted the fish and didn't like it but assumed that it was just an unknown sort so I ate a little more. After eating about a quarter of it I gave it up as a bad job and didn't eat the rest. When I got back home I realized why I didn't like it, I spent the whole night sitting on the loo. The last time that I'll eat at the Buffalo Tavern.

I haven't been for a while but Buffalo Tavern served up (and I'm sure still does - Bill doesn't take any shite from the staff) some of the best food in Hua Hin a while back.

There are so many choices in Hua Hin it's hard to get through them all but I've been quite rude not to pop into the place that served me so well during my time in Hua Hin.

Bill and family... if you still read this forum, I shall certainly pay a visit on the first weekend of next month.

For an establishment to survive as long as 'The Buffalo Tavern' have done they must be doing something right.

Edit: Expat71NL... thanks very much for reminding me about this great place... I'd foolishly let it slip during my few visits to restaurants in Hua Hin over the last few years.

I'm afraid the quality has slipped now! My partner ate a paella which was grossly over cooked, one of the worst I've ever come across (if he can't make it then he shouldn't sell it!). Didn't look to be many other customers either!

Surprized at your bad experience expat, I have had some great meals at Bills, and they have been around for a longtime so they certainly get it right more often than not. We know how tough the restaurant business is!

Tried Buffalo Tavern twice in fairly recent past and very disappointed on both occassions.

For unbiased reporting you should have gone unannounced. On the other hand you have probably just guaranteed yourself a spotless meal.

As promised earlier, after recommendations on this thread, I got a F & C takeaway from Lins a few days ago. Plenty of both fish & chips, a pot of peas and 2 slices of bread for 180 Baht (I think).

I think it was DM who stated that to qualify as traditional UK style F & C, the fish has to be battered and not breaded. IMO the chips should be real also, these aren't, they are frozen so I won't be partaking again as there are better options.

I've not had F & C from JW's for a few years, I know his chips are real, is his fish battered ? If so next on the list although I'm not usually in town at dinnertime, or teatime for us Northerners :neener:

Really posted this to try to get a thread on F & C to reach 10 pages

Tasted fine DM, they all have but her who must be obeyed prefers the one from the old Bar Tender.

The one at Gifs is frozen fish from Makro so I think Pangus (spellIng?) but I am sure some buy from the market but all similar nice taste.

We havent done battered fish for a few years now, would like to do it on Fridays maybe and would use fresh snapper or Pla Chong if it can be found - had that one time cooked by my dad and its a super tasty and very meaty. Batter experiments will start this week!

Cheers,
