There is one MP who said that he will pursue the case and try to get to the bottom of it. Hopefully, he won't be found at the bottom of the Chao Praya.

I'm not so sure this will go away easily - I certainly hope not.

Whilst any monies paid to the policeman's family might mitigate any civil suit by that family, there still remain criminal charges that should be persued by the police - before they all lapse.

Oh, wait a minute, those criminal charges are exactly those that have been dropped and to the best of my memory, they weren't exactly vigourously followed up in the first place.

This country should hang its head in shame, but I doubt it cares.

Maybe it's just the cynic in me but the timing of the announcement looks impeccable and premeditated too ... on a Friday just before the a long weekend when everyone has their minds on other things like visiting family etc. Bunch of crooks.

That large sum was just 3 million baht!
The Attorney General says that all charges have been dropped as the victim's family have already been compensated and other charges were dropped after passing the statute of limitations. Unbelievable.

Seems to have hit the majority of the world's news media. I'm not sure this will just go away.
I was wondering if it was because of the statute of limitations that the charges had been dropped but I hadn't actually seen it reported anywhere.

If it was because of that then it just shows how ridiculous it is that Thai law doesn't have a tolling provision as part of its statute of limitations. Otherwise all you have to do is flee the country long enough and you can get away with any crime you like.
Tolling is a legal doctrine that allows for the pausing or delaying of the running of the period of time set forth by a statute of limitations.

Common grounds for tolling include:

The defendant is not physically within a certain jurisdiction (state or country).

AFAIK only the charge of causing death remained. Even that would have expired in 2027 (15 years after being charged).

Red Bull exec's kid arrested for fatal running over of cop

A scathing article regarding this case - but as critical it is of the system, it will almost certainly fall onto deaf ears!!

It looks as though quite a few others have been paid off in this case. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... DWYkNq3PVo

I hope the original investigators are severely reprimanded for getting their investigation sooooo wrong :? After all, they've forced the poor kid to live a Playboy lifestyle whilst on the run.

The best part of the article (that makes no sense) are the comments. You'd have to be Thai to go for the explanation.

Well, if you can back Germany in WW 1 & Japan in WW 2 then, the US in Vietnam, you'll go for anything that looks like an easy out and saves your behind.

The guy was drunk. Charged and proven but dropped because of the Statute of Limitations.

In most other countries, driving while drunk would discount any defence.

This forum, like all forums and web site comment sections, serve as an emotional release for the pent up feelings of helplessness in the face of situations that we cannot control or influence. Those situations have grown exponentially since the advent of Trump's presidency, Covid-19, increased numbers of wars, the impotency of the poor to change their situations and any number of local and world wide events that we have no control or say over. Aside from the world becoming Buddhist, I don't see any solutions to these problems so, PET, let us have our say and in time, the subject will fade and be replaced by other subjects that will probable draw your ire. Also in many countries the police would seek justice for their dead colleague

It's a whitewash by all accounts.
This week, the original forensic expert who testified to police that the car had been travelling at 177km per hour has reconfirmed his analysis and says he stands by his evidence to prosecutors.

Sathon Vijarnwannaluk is a lecturer in Physics at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Science.

He established his thinking on the case after looking at a CCTV video taken from a commercial premises on Sukhumvit Soi 53.

The footage was taken just 100 metres from where the accident took place or within seconds of impact.

This showed the Ferrari car entering the frame and disappearing within 1 second. Based on this analysis, given that the width of the scene was 30 meters, Mr Sathon concluded that the vehicle was moving at more than 108km per hour.

He subsequently set up two specialist teams to analyse the speed of the car through two different approaches in more depth.

One team suggested a speed of 177 km per hour while the other suggested 174 km per hour.
