Most of the smoke and haze is blowing in from Cambodia with light easterly winds.
That's what I posted 3 weeks ago, but it has taken until now for these idiots to notice it!

Chiang Mai’s air quality worst in the world

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30383081

Chiang Mai’s air-quality ranking took a severe hit, with the city being named the worst in the world, followed by Mumbai, Kathmandu and Kolkata, the application Air Visual revealed on Saturday (February 29) as of 11.37am.

The application showed Chiang Mai’s average pollution at 193, with particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) at 137.8 micrograms per cubic metre.

According to the Air Quality Index, air quality between 0 to 50 is healthy, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 150 is unhealthy for sensitive groups, 151 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and 301 to 500 is dangerous.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) said via its website that the air quality (as of 7am) in Bangkok and nearby provinces was at healthy levels, and would get better.

The PCD found PM2.5 at between 16 and 46 micrograms per cubic metre.

What they don't mention, and probably do not know, is that the winds at all levels are presently from the south, pushing all the crap from the east towards Chiang Mai.

This country P's me off big time from time to time. Mrs BB has Thai news on this morning, and they are on about Chiang Mai's air quality being the worst in the world. Next news clip, they are showing the burning. Why doesn't clip 3 show the police arresting the burners? There's a smoke plume several hundred feet in the air to help find them. If the local news company can find them, why can't the police?

Smoke and mirrors, northern Thailand’s annual smog problem

("Rose of the North"...not anymore, not even close. :( )

Maps, charts and photos at link: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/air-pol ... og-problem

Congratulations Chiang Mai. Again you are the world’s Number One.

Sadly, you’re the number one in the world’s worst air pollution, again. The third time in this week alone. And, sadly, because the problem is almost completely avoidable, but not easily solved.

Chiang Mai city has a PM2.5 micron reading this morning of 282, whilst just north of the city in Nong Han they have the staggering reading of 380 (hazardous).....

Toxic haze alert for 4 provinces

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... s#cxrecs_s

The Public Health Ministry on Thursday advised people to stay indoors to avoid haze in Chiang Mai, Phrae, Uttaradit and Tak.

The advice was specially directed at children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with allergies. These people are urged to avoid going outside unless necessary.

If they must step outside, they should wear a face mask, according to the advisory which was issued after the Department of Pollution Control reported PM2.5 dust had exceeded the government-designated safe level of 50 microgrammes per cubic metre in four northern provinces.

Levels reached 56µg/m³ in Chiang Mai's Mae Cham district; 55µg/m³ in Muang district of Phrae; 55µg/m³ in Mae Sot district in Tak and 56µg/m³ in Muang district in Uttaradit.

Meanwhile, the public and private sector in Chiang Mai are preparing tree saplings to promote forest growth to reduce air pollution.

Haze and forest fires have been plaguing the northern region, especially Chiang Mai, for quite some time as authorities have struggled to control the fires which have partly been caused by crop-burning for agricultural activities.

Deputy governor Komsan Suwan-ampa said yesterday the number of fire hot spots in the province had reduced from 22 the previous day to just nine thanks to rainfall. Consequently, the air quality in the province had also improved markedly. However, stakeholders in 25 districts are still surveying areas as they prepare to manage the presence of dry plant debris in the forests.

Besides preparing saplings, which they expect to plant after the Covid-19 situation improves, they also plan to educate locals in alternative ways to manage debris or unwanted plants, he said.

They can be used to produce alternative energy, he added.

I noticed the hazy effect returning to Hua Hin's hills over the last couple of days, and the numbers, whilst still green, are starting to creep up. The indicators on my wife's air purifiers are rising slowly also. I guess September is about the right time to start.

It's that time of year again, and alerts starting earlier each year even now with driving, tourists, air flights and factory output down due to Covid. However, farm crop stubble burning apparently continues year after year. :banghead:

Air pollutant PM2.5 rises to unhealthy levels in Bangkok

Start wearing a N95 face mask when walking in Bangkok, the air pollutant PM2.5 is at unhealthy levels. 34 areas in the city and in surrounding provinces have levels of PM2.5 exceeding the safety standard, according to an air quality report by the Department of Pollution Control.

The air pollutant PM2.5 is fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. At high levels, the pollutant can be harmful to people’s health. Due to its small size, PM2.5 can get deep into the respiratory tract and lungs. It can also potentially enter the bloodstream.

The Department of Pollution Control reported today that 34 areas in Bangkok and surrounding provinces have PM2.5 levels that exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3). Levels over 50 µg/m3 are considered unhealthy.

Under the US Air Quality Index, which measures the concentration of air pollutants, Bangkok air is at “unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.” An AQI at 0 to 50 is considered safe, while 300 and up is considered dangerous…

0-50: Good
51-100: Moderate
101-150:Unhealthy for sensitive groups
151-200: Unhealthy
201-300: Very unhealthy
301-500: Hazardous

Today, Bangkok ranked 23 in the most polluted cities in the world in a list by IQ Air with an AQI of 121 and a PM2.5 level of 43.6 µg/m3. The rankings by IQ Air are constantly changing. Bangkok’s air quality is forecasted to reach “unhealthy” levels this weekend with an ASQ of 156 to 164.

To protect yourself from air pollution, IQ Air recommends wearing a air pollution protection face mask, reducing outdoor exercise, closing windows to avoid dirty outdoor air and running an air purifier.

Yes, the bad air time is definitely with us. It has been bad here for quite a few days now. I trust my Mk 1 eyeball as I drive down to Khao Tao, and the visibility on the hills to my right.

Today is actually better than the last couple of days in my opinion. However, since last year's problems with Mrs BB, we run a couple of heavy duty air purifiers in the house 24/7. I probably monitor the air quality more than most.

As I said in a previous post, the quality has been worsening since September.
