The biggest benefit with EV cars is that China’s lead in EV production will hopefully make western country manufacturers pull their socks up and compete in terms of performance and price, thus customers benefit.
I did mention above that some of what China makes is good - I can’t see this car being rubbished by the motoring experts, although it’s clearly targeting a small audience of wealthy sports car enthusiasts!!

It looks like Tesla Shanghai must be now the largest volume car plant in the world surpassing VW in Wolfsburg which has held the record for many years:

Only because BMW are being bribed with huge amounts of taxpayer’s money. Another ludicrous venture.

Maybe, but unless they are manufactured in the UK they suffer huge tax burdens

It would appear that BMW are putting in the major amount of investment in this new plant £600m compared to £75m from the Government, so I wouldn’t call that exactly huge.

In a warm climate like Thailand, does the AC have a big effect on performance?

Do you mean performance or range? But in any case I think the answer in either case will be not a lot and I doubt it will be much different than using the AC in somewhat cooler climates.

No, and unnoticeable. Actually uses very little, as we'll leave the dog in the car, running, AC on high, and it uses very little, about 2% or about 7 kms of range, in the span of an hour. Dog in car while we stop at Swensen's for some Ice Cream, car on, full power.

So you could 'camp' in it, which we did 1 night, as a tester. Nice having AC when 30C outside. That 2% X how many hours in and or sleeping doesn't add up to much.

Not sure just how you can remove a battery from an EV car, but that is what is being reported:

Electric vehicle battery causes fire at Sydney Airport, destroys five cars

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-12/ ... /102846146

Five cars have been destroyed after a lithium-ion battery exploded at Sydney Airport on Monday night.

Fire and Rescue NSW and the Aviation Rescue Firefighting Service battled the blaze which broke out under the control tower on the southern end of Airport Drive in Mascot.

Firefighters confirmed sparks spread from a detached lithium-ion battery from a luxury car to four nearby cars parked at the airport about 8:30pm.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW said that while battery fires were not uncommon, electric vehicles were not a concern for authorities.

"EV batteries are very different to the system in smaller devices, like e-scooters or e-bikes," he said.

"We don't see too many e-vehicle battery fires. They meet a much higher standard and regulation.

"I don't know the brand of the vehicle, but I'm pretty sure the manufacturers will have an interest in this," he said.

It is unclear why the battery was removed from the car prior to the fire.

There were about 25 to 30 cars in the car park at the time of the fire.

Superintendent Dewberry said the incident could have been much worse.

"The aviation team were on the scene very quickly and able to get on top of this fire. Even with the close proximity they are to the fire ... it spread fairly quickly."

A fire and rescue team monitored the battery overnight, before handing the scene back to airport investigators.

In cases of a lithium-ion battery fire firefighters will cool down the battery and place it in a container with water to stop re-ignitions.

Alternatively, Superintendent Dewberry said firefighters would remain on the scene throughout the night in case of a spark-up.

The owners of the cars have yet to be notified.

Yeah, something not quite right about that story. You can't just "detach" or remove the main lithium-ion battery from an EV. The battery is bolted in to the chassis. You need to be in a dedicated facility with specialized equipment to lift the vehicle up off the ground, get underneath it and use power tools to unbolt and detach it. Also, an EV's main battery weighs hundreds of kilos so again, you'd need specialized equipment to handle that weight. Somebody who's just leaving their EV parked at an airport is not going to detach the battery.

Here's a video illustrating what's needed to remove an EV battery. There's no way you could do this in an airport parking lot.
