Maybe they mean disconnected but still in-situ which is common practice for long term parking?

Electric-car battery catches fire, sets four other vehicles alight at Sydney Airport

An electric MG ZS EV – which had its battery removed – ignited a fire which also burned four other vehicles parked near it at a Sydney Airport holding yard.

A fire sparked by a lithium-ion electric-car battery – that had been removed from a MG ZS electric vehicle – has destroyed five cars in a holding yard near Sydney Airport, with investigation underway into what caused the blaze.

In a media statement, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said firefighters were called to the blaze at a holding yard on Airport Drive in Mascot around 8:30pm on Monday 11 September, 2023.

While the lithium-ion battery which sparked the fire was from an MG ZS EV, it had recently been removed from the electric SUV after it was suspected to have been damaged.

It looks like some kind of botched idea to steal the battery, but that could be wide of the mark, but definitely very strange!!

Perhaps someone was stealing it and something went wrong. 🤔
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

According to the article, the battery wasn't just disconnected, it was "removed from the car prior to the fire."

Also, even to disconnect the main lithium-ion battery in an EV, I think you'd still have to remove it since as far as I can tell, the wiring connecting it is not accessible untill you've taken the battery out.

That's certainly the way it looks from the video I posted earlier.

And from what I’ve read, you need specialised equipment for dealing with 400/800V systems if you want to avoid getting fried!!

Hardly surprising, but why oh why do the West seem to do fcuk all about it until it's way, way too late..... Nothing like closing the gate after the horse has bolted!

Chinese state subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles were $57 billion from 2016-2022, according to consulting firm Alix Partners, helping China become the world's biggest EV producer and to pass Japan as the largest auto exporter in the first quarter of this year

"BRUSSELS, Sept 13 (Reuters) - The European Commission launched an investigation on Wednesday into whether to impose punitive tariffs to protect European Union producers against cheaper Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports it says are benefiting from state subsidies.

"Global markets are now flooded with cheaper electric cars. And their price is kept artificially low by huge state subsidies," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in her annual address to the bloc's parliament, seen by many in Brussels as a pitch for her re-appointment for a second term.

The Commission will have up to 13 months to assess whether to impose tariffs above the standard 10% EU rate for cars in its highest profile case against China since an EU probe into Chinese solar panels narrowly avoided a trade war a decade ago."

In the long run, fixing climate change might be more important to the world than propping up the German car industry.
Generally all this kind of protectionism achieves is to make your own industries more obsolete, it would be better to start investing heavily to be able to compete.

But whose going to invest heavily, the car manufacturers or the Government (subsidies)?

This whole article is absurd. By and large, fossil fuels aren’t subsidised, they are taxed; it’s wind & solar that need subsidies.
I do wish the nut job environmentalists would leave these matters to the professionals.

If anyone is interested, Bluport have installed 4 EV chargers on the ground floor of the car park, two immediately facing the store, opposite the wine shop. Two in the row behind. From what I could see, two different types of chargers as well.
