I never use IE so can't really comment pete.
The different browsers process the pages differently though, IE tends to wait until its loaded the whole page and then display it while Firefox loads it as it gets it which is why its so much faster.

On IE I type in the address at the top and I get to the site I want, I use HHAD obviously and I manage to read the Bangkok Post e-edition and other news-sites, I use Yahoo for e-mail and Google to find out things I don’t know and that’s about it.
Quicker than IE and seems suited to what you want.
