Hua Hin bars of old

I'm pretty sure that U-Turn moved after I arrived in Hua Hin, so that would make it about 2003 I think.
A useful source of info would be Paul, as he was involved with Taxi Jacks (RIP), but I think that was maybe around 2000. He is in the UK now but I can contact him if you don't have his details.

I think Wonderlust is right about U-Turn. They played the first season of the pool league 2002-03 at the old location.

As I remember it,Jack let his bar out to a scandinavian guy who had been living in Phuket and in 2001 took the pub/guest house back as he had stopped paying the rent.At this time Jack entered into a 50/50 agreement with Paul and another guy from Essex, to run the place 4 nights to 3.Next I knew,Jack went home because his mother was ill and it became limelight.Certainly one of the 2 guys hung around as I met him one night in 2002 when I was drinking with Irish Tom(who arranged golf holidays) in Willo guest house just before Peter sold out and On got the dosh.Most of this info I got from Ling who spent some time working at Taxi jacks and eventually became cashier.Last I saw of her she was a waitress at one of the pier restaurants.Lovely girl as well.

Guess is right that this thread should be split, with the bar info going on a new one. I'm not sure how to do that and would worry that I'd lose everything if I tried. Can another mod oblige?

It was built buy a Brit, Roy, whose wife sold it to another Brit, Adrian, when he was away. He lost it once by cheats and regained it only to be cheated again.

The site has a jinx.

In the era I am asking about it was a French Restaurant which I also believe had difficulties.

I had better repeat this,

Wanderlust, yes if you have contact with Paul then I am sure he will remember well. If I did want to know anything about HH before I arrived that was the guy I would ask.

BTW Royal Garden was the name of a group of hotels. The one I knew was right in the centre of Pattaya and was later renamed by the new owners, Marriot.

OK so much of 1999 will be relevant for the 1997 map. Email is better than PM ' I can attach the map for comment. I have an address for buksida, Billy and BG but the one for you is defunct now I think.

Is the Kanjanomai area the narrow soi off Poolsuk or the Petchakasem Soi 41 junction?

I can't post the map until I am clear on the copyright situation but I can email it OK.

I'll leave the walkabout to you and Lomu and anyone else that wishes to join in. Nung (Nung Bar), Ang (Philip & Ang), Canadian Jim (Coconuts 2), Hansi??? (Jailhouse) and Craig (U-Turn) might be be good sources of information.

Lomu will keep make the alcohol consumption is kept to a reasonable level.

I have locations for those above and Willo's but not opening and closing dates.

Billy's, Bernies, Octopus's and Coconuts all had previous locations but I don't know where exactly.

When did Jungle Juice open?

The 1987 may prove too difficult so I think I will make a start on 1997 when the Observer was already on the go.

If anybody can answer any of those I think it should be in a new thread.

Guess - I've pm'd with more info, but just reading through again - you mention a French Restaurant on the old Fairways site. I don't remember any french place down there at all. Only German (Checkpoint Charlie, run by Ouvre.) And Gee of course. Must admit I need a wander around to kick the brain cells into gear!

Bernie's was where the Toro bar now is. Billy's, further up towards the temple on the other side. It was split into 3 bars, one of which is The Romantic now, I'm sure and probably the other two next door, heading towards the Hilton.
I'd need to walk down there as well to remember exactly.

I remember when Nung's was the only bar down that road and Selakam was mostly residential. Anyone remember the original Hog's Breath on the corner? Hua Hin's only aircon bar. Then we had the "Three ladies" across the street from the original King's bar.

In the bazaar Doug and Jaew's Little Big Horn was a favourite with the few expats that there were in those days. Hurricane Pub anyone? Thep getting smashed and playing guitar like a legend! Little England run by Gary on soi Kanjanomai?

Paradise disco in the early days? A dodgy little place called Ekapong south of town over the flyover ... the goldfish bowl in City Beach ... Ahhh the memories!

I don't know if it was there in the "old" days but when I first came to Hua Hin about 5 years ago, one of my favorite watering holes was J&B guest house (and bar) over on Naebkhahard road.

It was owned by a Canadian (Barrie) and his wife (Nim) and always had a good mix of North American and British ex-pat patrons. They had a great breakfast and burgers, good cold beer, a seemingly constant game of cribbage going, and interesting conversation. Since it was a bit off the beaten bar track, there was plenty of parking too!

In the last three years it has changed owners several times, and changed the name to the Shed. Everytime I go by there now it seems to be empty.

Barrie is now running a place for a friend in Satukarn square and it is much like the old place. Maybe it's the owner/host that makes or breaks a place.

There was Headrock Bar opposite The Hilton (or Melia as it was then), run by a Brit called Mike in 1998. I'd again need to walk down there to identify what the shops are now in that old location.
I'm trying to remember the layout of Bintabart in the days that I had my bar there (arrived 1998). Some have been mentioned already. Starting at the Hilton End:
King Bar on the right, Three Ladies opposite where J Jean is now. There were two large bars each side of "The Soi with No Name" that leads down to Selakem. I can't remember their names. The Rose Bar was next door to The Friendly Bar. Opposite the latter was the bar at Bahn Pak Phuen, the old guesthouse that is now the swish hotel.
"A Romantic Bar" opened next to The Friendly Bar in 1999 and two doors down from that was Uwe with Checkpoint Charlie Restaurant. On the other side, I'm sure there was nothing except Mom and Pop stores, laundry and hairdressers, until you got to Billy's and there was nothing after that to the temple.
The Tulip Bar run by the teetotal Dutchman (forget his name) is now UTurn (?) and there was nothing after that.
I can't remember when The Celtic Bar started, but it was certainly before 2000.
I do remember Hog's Breath well. Canadian Jim (not to be confused with Coconuts Jim) was a good friend. He disappeared after getting shafted by the ultimate owner of the Hogsbreath bars in BKK.

I think Head Rock appeared in it's first incarnation around 87/88, ages before the Melia was even started - the street was unsurfaced with no street lighting and very quiet at night.

There were a couple of small guest houses, Europa notably, on that street (Naresdamri) It was dark and quiet along there. I think Zuri bar and Willy's existed then as little out door bars.

and on Soi Kanjanomai there was Ussah's and a couple of others. On Bindabaht I only remember Ban Puuan and Ban Pak, don't think there were any bars.

All Nations was open of course and anybody remember Kiwi Corner?

Buksi - tsk tsk - the Goldfish Bowl in City Beach - I'm shocked. Truly shocked. That explains the Comfort incident anyway...
