IVF - Abused - or a legitimate use of healthcare?

Post by margaretcarnes »

Must say that I'd expected some strong opinions on this, but never expected it to be so tipped to the 'anti' side.
Don't disagree though. Its just surprising how many folk are prepared to admit that they have made reasoned decisions not to breed (as I did myself - and have a few friends who have also gone down the 'no kids' route by choice.)
So does this leave society with an imbalance? I.E. those who can least afford children - financially or emotionally - actually have more, while those who think about it sensibly - don't?
The 'Welfare' route to handouts and Council flats is certainly true in England. And I'd certainly support mandatory sterilisation of people with some disabilities, and love to see more emphasis on adoption as an alternative to IVF. But it just doesn't seem to be a PC option these days. Theres more emphasis on trying to get people to adopt dogs!
I do think that for some women it becomes a kind of obsession to bear their own child at whatever cost, and I wonder why they can't consider adopting if the maternal instinct is so 'strong'. As someone has said - the little version of themselves maybe.
Well done SM for 'coming out' so eloquently!

awww thanks Mags

I could expand on that via the "Gods and Clods" argument for social engineering, but I think thats a wee bit too extreme.....

watch the start of the recent comedy film Idiocracy.....

IVF - Abused - or a legitimate use of healthcare?

News out yesterday was that the Mum concerned in this IVF/octuplets debate has now started a website offering sponsorship deals for her babies.
Having given an interview earlier this week to the American media, during which she was observed by psychiatrists who apparently pronounced her as a little disturbed, (and, according to a phone in listener on my local radio station sounds like Marge Simpson, which is true but totally irrelevant) this Mum is now, in my view, almost prostituting her babies to raise cash.
It is now clear that she did have IVF treatment. Also that there are supposed to be laws to restrict the number of ovaries fertilised. No doubt the authorities concerned will continue to investigate what happened in this particular case. But at the end of the day the babies exist, and face a future secure in the knowledge that they have been born to a mother who seems to have no qualms about bandying them about the Net.

Hi Margaret :D

Yes, I agree with you one hundred percent Margaret, it is one thing to have that many children when you are young and use IVF to achieve your dreams of parenthood, but quite another thing to use them, as a cash generating business.

Does this "Mother" have any morals at all?

And why did the IVF doctors implant so many eggs? :?
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
