It just gets worse and worse for Newcastle - 3 weeks to kick-off and still no buyer, no manager, no real team and now this:

And just when Newcastle fans were thinking it couldn't get any worse!

Newcastle United suffer humiliating 6-1 defeat to Leyton Orient

Okay, its only a friendly - but just look at their team! I wish I had put a bet on that they would go straight down to League 1 - too late now.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009 ... ton-orient

Newcastle's summer of misery continued as they lost 6-1 to League One side Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Jimmy Smith opened the scoring for Orient after just four minutes when he headed home unmarked from Sean Thornton's free-kick. Former Sunderland man Thornton made it 2-0 after 23 minutes, converting the penalty after Habib Beye handled inside the area.

Joey Barton got a goal back for Newcastle from the penalty spot on the half hour but Orient restored their two-goal cushion after half-time when Scott McGleish scored a staggering overhead kick from the edge of the area. Tamika Mkandawire made it four before substitutes Ryan Jarvis and Harry Baker compounded Newcastle's humiliation with two late goals.

The defeat comes with the question of who will manage Newcastle in the Championship next season still up in the air with Alan Shearer still thought to have his eyes on the role.

(edit - team from another source)

Newcastle: Krul (Forster 46); Beye (Lough 80), Coloccini (Geremi 46), Taylor (Tozer 80), Enrique (Kadar 73); Barton (Xisco 46), Nolan, Smith (Guthrie 61); Gutierrez, Martins (Carroll 46), Duff (LuaLua 73)
Subs: Tozer, Donaldson, Lough

Thanks for that, a few names in that side.

Well, personally, I'm looking for 3 teams to be worse than Plymouth this season (should have been on the Championship thread?). So it looks like Newcastle + 2 others :D

Edit  It was on the Championship thread

those poor geordie fans must be wondering whats hit them with all the recent disasters
i will say though, with a decent new manager (which must surely be sorted out sooner rather than later! :?) & that squad of players (maybe minus one or two sold off), they won't struggle at all in the championship.
in fact, depending on who they bring in as manager, i can see them challenging at the top end of the table

Yes, those men must be totally demoralized with all that has happened. They need a good leader and proper owner to bring them together. I wish them well. Pete

I disagree, going to st james park is going to be like a cup final for alot of teams in the championship.

I can see them getting battered personally. :guns:

a fair enough point of view, but i would wait & see who they sell and more importantly, who they install as manager first :|
having watched a lot of championship games last season, there isn't a club with a squad that can match the quality newcastle have.

all be revealed soon enough

agree....all Newcastle games will be cup finals....Leeds found that out.....and then again in league 1

Stability is the key.....Leeds have finally achieved that and played some great football after Christmas.....I think they will win the league this season. :guns:

Newcastle will be lucky to finish mid-table and go for promotion the following year :|
