I think mice in engine compartments is common in many places. I had a problem in cold, snowy Chicago years ago where they would jump up in there to keep warm. I had a block heater as well which made it nice for them at night. They would chew out a portion of the heat/noise liner right above the air cleaner casing and just live there. As the car was used for over 100 miles daily, they just went along for the ride apparently. When Spring came they were gone and I cleaned out all the straw, corn kernels and other furniture they left behind. Pete

I don't like mice or rats, I was bit by a rat when a kid in Detroit so never forgave the furry beasts.
I was driving a old truck of mine years ago. The engine compartment had a few openings into the cab. I was on the freeway 5 miles to the next exit when a mouse came out and sat on the passenger floorboard.
I reached in back for my toolbox (close since it was an old truck) and came out with a hammer. By that time the mouse ran under the seat.
I sped up, one eye on the road, one looking for the mouse with hammer in hand. I got to the exit, pulled off and went to a convenience store right there. I bought a mouse trap and jar of peanut butter, set traps on the passenger floor and other places, and continued on my trip, one eye looking for the mouse.
Big Boy, when I go out later I'll make a photo and upload it.
SteveG, did the moth balls make the passenger compartment smell when you used the A/C?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Last year rats or mice ate a metal in-ceiling light fixture and a hole in our ceiling. We changed pest control people as the first company couldn't seem to get them under control.
Since then they have eaten my phone line twice, my cable line once and my UBC/Truevisions line once. I hired someone to try to make sure all wires are in conduit (under the house and in the attic) but if they are exposed even a little at connecting points the rats get at them. They have already cost me a lot of money.
I took my car to the car wash yesterday and when I came back to pick it up the guy showed me where rats are eating my engine! No telling what else they are into in all the nooks and crannies of a car. The big plastic covers on top of my engine have chew marks all over them and there is already a small hole in one cover.
Besides the monthly professional pest control, I have been laying out those sticky traps and have caught 3 or 4 of them over a few weeks but now the rest have wised up and stay away from the traps, even when bated with chicken meat!
And before you ask, there is no exposed food source to attract them (other than the bait I was putting in the traps). Our house is spotlessly clean all the time as my wife is meticulous about this. I guess that's why they eat the house and car... Our land is bounded on three sides by somewhat overgrown empty lots. I'm guessing that's where the seemingly endless supply of them are coming from.
Does anyone else have this problem and/or know a solution. I've never seen animals like these Thai rodents that eat cars and houses before and neither of the pest control companies we've hired seem to be able to get rid of them.!
A cat is out of the question as my dog would kill it. (He actually killed one of the rats too but there still seem to be more of them around.)
HHfarang - you sound like a drama queen. Ever thought of a life on the stage? Who in reality gives a f? I think you need to discuss this with an agony aunt (a few on here right enough!)

No HH, I fastened them to the harness around the side with plastic cable ties and I certainly couldn't smell them.
I didn't really think it would work, but it seemed to do the trick.

You have already openly expressed your disdain for this forum and its members and on your first day back you proceed to post a bunch of dross in an effort to antagonize them.
You are banned from the forum, go and find somewhere else online more suited to your negative nature.
Gents if your getting a bit bored over there as kids we used to catch mice. Then at night dip them in kero and set them alight and let the run off down the street our very own fireworks
AM,
perhaps as kids we may not realize the cruelty of our actions. While I don't like vermin, I also would like to put them out of their misery fairly quickly.
When we were kids we used to go rat hunting with a .22 air rifle and a head torch. The rats were quite easy to spot, you'd see two red dots in the light. Unfortunately toad's eyes also have a similar reflection.
