I use it mainly for Hua Hin information but occasionally let myself get sucked into controversial stuff in Foo or Current Affairs.

I especially like the "Ask the Expats" forum as I can get and give help on there which makes it a valuable tool in a place like this that has no traditional "Yellow Pages" with which to find goods or services. :thumb:

I also really like "Feeding Time" as I am always looking for the next hidden gourmet gem off on some side Soi. :munch:

As I am retired, I also find it a good way to kill some time every day with some fun and entertainment provided by other members.

Mostly HHAD means I can pretend that we're in Hua Hin when we're stuck here in Farangland.

Sad really

The curiosity has been sparked though by the reaction some posters get when they post items not concerned with either Hua Hin or Thailand, most notably in Current Affairs, and I wondered if this reaction was applauded or derided by the members.
Local knowledge is always useful to dip into. I've rescued my pool, neutered my dog, obtained my driving licence and visa docs, made new friends, obtained free books and films and found good places to take visitors. Thanks to other members for their input. :thumb:

So, yes. Very happy with such a useful forum.

Sandman,

Is this your army of bikini chix? They look like they might be trying to spell Sandman...

I find the Forum useful for a number of reasons

It is a good sourse of information for anyone planning to visit, spend time in or live in Hua Hin.

It also has a sense of community which is important when you are living as an expat, you need the support and communication -particularly in a country that can enjoyable and difficult to live in

Too true

Whilst living in the sticks I have met many that have "lost it". Totally commited to village life and the bottle. Like a retreat from the norm.

HHAD keeps us (the sane ones) to stay on track

Advertising on any forum should be a no no. Regardless what business it is. It's kinda like getting spam when checking your emails. :tsk:
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

Huh? For good or ill, HHAD has many paid sponsors. Buffalo Bill, for instance, is a paid sponsor, and announces various specials, quiz nights, etc. I can't see any problem with that. It's in the Feeding Time section, and you can ignore it, go to his restaurant, whatever - but it is advertising and it isn't a problem. He pays for us to have a free forum.

JD occasionally posts about new products at his store. He even has a sticky thread for it.

The only kind of advertising I would object to is hidden advertising, or someone who posts 'with an agenda' to drive customers without openly advertising their business. What BB and JD are doing is completely above board. They pay for banners and they make posts advertising their businesses.

Check the biggest Thailand forum for advertising. Their biggest advertiser is also one of the most prolific and helpful posters there, and one of the few who won't call you an idiot for asking a question.

Disclaimer - I've been to BB's place once (no problem, good food, just haven't made it back) and go to JD's every month or two. They were just the first two advertisers that came to mind. Guess I read Feeding Time too much.

HobieCat, this is not a personal attack, I was just surprised by your post. HHAD is not Usenet. (Sometimes I wish I had a different user name.)

What do you use HHAD for?

Post by margaretcarnes »

To be honest I can see Hobiecats point there re advertising, and hadn't realised the ones he picked out are paying sponsors. Thanks HHF for the explanation. Maybe the situation could be made a little more clear though on posts, perhaps a different banner or something to show that certain posts by sponsers are infact legitimate ads?
I'm not being funny here, but to members who maybe don't know those concerned it can look as if people are taking advantage of the forum to promote their businesses.

It has been made quite clear in our T&C's and Forum Starter Pack (that you all should have read and agreed to on registration) that we do not allow self promotion so all posts of this nature should be considered as 'sponsor advertorials'.

It is each individuals choice whether they read them or not although we do agree that some are informative and others read more like spam, this is down to the business owner.

All other promo posts (aside from member recommendations) are deleted and the business owner is presented with our advertising options, freeloaders are not welcome on this forum. We do not expect to frequent their establishment and consume their products for free so we do expect some reciprocation on here.
