Indian Restaurant

Post by heretostay »

I believe The Maharajah is a good Indian restaurant. If you were to come out the Hilton, turn right and walk to the end of the road turning left at the end of the road the restaurant is on the right hand side.
Tried before expensive and not very nice.

S&S in 94

Tried a couple of dishes so far. Jalfrezi tasty but tame. Dhansak excellent.

Agree with JimmyG - Maharajah certainly used to be very variable. I started to use a smaller place just around the corner from Maharajah - on the little soi leading to the waterfront. I don't know if it's still there, but it was much more reliable, and better value IMO.
Sounds like S & S has filled a much needed gap in the market though. There's plenty of choice for Indian food in places like Bangkok and ChiangMai, but HH has lagged behind.

S & S is good value and I think their chicken and vegetarian dishes are better than the lamb.

S&S is now on Soi 94. Had some take away Chicken korma and Nan was very Good. The owner told me he is doing a Buffet on Sundays 6pm on. Was like 3 dishes, rice and nan for 99baht. I think for the price will be worth a try.

Certainly worth a try at that price Fred!
Earlier comments about tough lamb are worthy of note IMO - I always avoid lamb in Indian restaurants - including my regular very good place in the UK. First - it can often be mutton, not lamb. Second - Indian cooking is generally much too fast even for lamb, while mutton requires very long slow cooking to achieve the texture us Westerners expect, and simply isn't suited to Indian cooking.
Neither meat produces what we are used to unless lamb/mutton is used minced.
Marinading the lamb well before cooking could probably help tenderise it, but many Indian restaurants just have the sauces ready to sling in the meat of choice before serving.

I drove up Soi 94 today and didn't see S & S, but it was before you posted the 200m message, so I guess it's in that bunch of fairly new small shops on the south side of the Soi across from the green construction fence? :?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

The best Indian curries I have had in the UK were at the back of sweatshops and warehouses down Petticoat lane in Londons east end. The pot had usually been on the simmer for a week and all dipped in with nan for a really tasty (not over chillied) mouthful. No knives, forks and spoons required.

Even when I got take aways from other Indian restuarants I always kept them in the fridge for a couple of days and then warmed them up.

So where do the tailors in HH eat? Has anybody asked them? Do they have a pot on the simmer in the back room?

Anway, whatever and wherever it must be accompanied by good nan bread, lime pickle and Bombay duck

Oh jeeze now I am hungry and I have just had a lovely sunday roast at JJs

Oh I heard on some website that a good one can be had at a place called "Lomus Kitchen". Anybody know where that is? Mind you I have heard its going Mex and there is the mandatory 4 large Changs before the meal. 2 for you and 2 for the chef:wink:

Yes in the new'ish small shop units opposite the green fence. It's a double unit with total glass front, so can't miss it if you're looking at the shops. If you get as far as the Narawan Hotel on your right then you've just gone passed it.
