chrisj6001 wrote:Your right about numbers and keeping a club going as bills do have to be paid 24/7 that is why you can also utilise the premises for other things and transform into the club as the day/night progresses. Years ago clubs where cash cows now only the strong survive and you have to know what you are doing, perhaps that is why I lasted 33 years in the business and the 108 clubs I have had involvement in, some up to 3500 capacity.

I know a well run club on a split tier system would do well in Hua Hin and could also improve what entertainment is around it. In the past in most of the major towns/cities in the UK, when venues work together a big improvement was noticed.

I will let you know what I think of the Hilton and can I improve on it.
Have a good look into licences as I mentoned before, this place has recently been closed down by the old bill because cutomers were not permitted to dance inside it, will re-open again soon as a regular bar. Understand one of the Thai co-owners is very well in with the local old bill too, but still no-go. And this all came after spening a fair amount fitting it out :?

Nightclub/Business Rates Question

Post by chrisj6001 »

Thanks Joe for your reply and Tip, I know it will not be easy but worth a try as I am sure standards will go up all round.

If you run the place right and can show that it benefits the community, people in the right places have in the past got aboard other projects I have done and they have worked so lets hope the right people will at least sit down and talk.

It club life it is not easy and sometimes you have to say no and no means no and upsets people when you do but I always so no if it is wrong.

Business Rates QUESTION.

Yes you are right to say that on business premises you pay Business Rates, but I along with thousands of others call it Council Tax as it is levied on you by the local council, it is a tax and when you go to pay it, the signs over the door and in the office say Pay You Council Tax Here.

So that is what we call it.

Chris

sorry to rain on your parade mate but it just isnt viable to open a club here - be it 300 bodies or more. For that you would need a building.... and the way central Hua Hin is set out prevents that. The properties here are all small ex-fisher house plots, some barely converted. To build a 300 + capacity place you would need to buy up a sizable chunk of the Bintablok area..... good luck if you have the money. Land and property here is sky high anyway....once the owners get wind of your plan to buy adjoining plots the prices would rocket.

Then theres the building and licensing hassles with the local plod and council...who are in the pocket of your main competitor (the wooden place). Ching ching! Throw into that mix potential issues with everyone from the drunk off duty cops, the skooter kids, local tuk tuk mafia, local residents, etc etc etc... Then theres the Grammy Scam Scum Squad to play with.

The only viable option is out of town.... then its a struggle to get your audience to your place....and they aint gonna walk. If farangs wont cross the road to go to soi bars on the far side of the road imagine your issues getting 300 + punters in and out. Cue conflicts with the tuk tuk boys.....

Finally you have the changing tourist demographic here..... we get mostly couples and families now rather than young lads or backpackers. Hua Hin gets pitched as a higher end honeymoons and families type resort.

Good luck if you are determined mate, as like many here Id love to see the Hilton given a run for its money..... but be prepared with a massive war chest as otherwise you havent got a hope. On a scale thing opening a normal small bar here can be like storming a small wooden walled fort.... what you propose is attacking the triple layer 30 foot thick walls of Constantinople.

Some good points there Sandman, and spot on about the hassle involved getting even a small bar up and running.
It's still a gap in the HH market though IMO, and nightclubs don't have to equal younger customers. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be aimed at older customers/couples. There's a distinction between nightclub and disco which seems to have become a bit blurred on here.
I do think a 300/400 capacity though is over optimistic. Especially as you say with the problem of large enough premises which are easily accessible to tourists. My first reaction was that 200 would be more realistic, and there are places which would accomodate that number, even if on 2 floors.
New proposals to deport expats found profiting from bar fines though might free up a few properties before long?

What about City Beach Hotel as a possible venue? It used to have a disco I believe so should have room.

Think the disco there is now active again.

Ideal venue though and good location. May be able to top the rental if you have a pot of gold.

Think City Beach also has police connections. That may help for the right tea money

This probably warrants a completely separate thread, but tell us more about these proposals please.

BB There was an article in the Pattaya Times but I have not posted the link, because I can't find it for some reason, sorry. :(

It was aimed at Farangs profiting from the "Bar Fines" in bars and clubs, who, if caught, would be fined and deported. So I don't think it will affect the OPs plans.

If the BIB's plans come to fruition, then there will be a hell of a lots of beer bars for sale there.

Sorry :offtopic:
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Heres the link

If it is ENFORCED then bars will close all over the place :(

A greater worry is the rumblings coming from the Red shirt brigade. Civil war? Not far away I fear

Nightclub in Hua Hin

Post by thaiboxer »

Regarding a night club in Hua Hin, I know there is a large one already opening within the next couple of weeks. It is a partnership between a Thai and Uk guy. Premises and fittings are near to completion too. Having just returned from Hua Hin I have noticed this year there are lots more OAP's rather than the younger market.
