I suppose the 3G version of the ipad will be capable of making phone calls.
As far as using it as an ebook reader goes, the critical point to me will be if you will be able to read any ebook on it, or only ones you've paid for from the Apple store.
Actually I'll probably go for the Sony as I can already read ebooks on an LCD screen by using my laptop and I can't buy an ipad at the moment anyway.

an excellent review sm. TY.
The only real complaint i have heard is the reflective screen.
I am surprised with a sony.
What worries me is that a few of the other competitors seem to want to lock you into buying from there cyberstores.
Amazon already has a deal.
Will the new Apple slab only let you download from Applebooks.com?

If i buy a book at the full price then having read it i pass it on.
Am i paper pirate?
It worries me a lot. (must get out more)
It seems that too few may end up controlling your reading.
After this rant i would normally say i will wait till the film comes out.
But this time.
I think i will wait till the book comes out.

You can load any book on any reader as long as it can read the format. If not you can download a free word pdf converter off the web.

I dont have a reader yet but already have hundreds of books waiting... 8)

And yes the ipad does have a usb plugin availiable so no probs there.

A fix for the reflective screen is an aftermarket matte screen film like y stick on a phone screen- I find just angling the screen away from the light works. Sony make em but places like Maplins or EBay are cheaper.

The IPad phone mix up is my bad - its what journo's speculated as the next add on for the (soon to come out) Ipad V2 that puts on the stuff they missed off V1. I still dont get the idea of an Ipad...whats the difference, other than a touchscreen, between it and a small ebook laptop?

It's all about the UI I suppose, I've never owned one Apple product but you've got to admit it looks a pleasure to use HERE
