I think that I would be trying to get an "electrician" to look at it, rather than somebody with a vested interest that wants to sell you a new motor. (if that is fact the problem)

Back to your previous post re who installed it. A device such as this, that is outside in the weather and open to the elements should be on its own dedicated circuit, AND protected with some type of safety device, such as an ELCB or better, a RCD, that will trip with any fault, especially one where somebody can touch the exposed metal of the device.

I have seen many examples of mixed circuits installed where the equipment should be on its own dedicated circuit, combined with a complete lack of ANY earthing (grounding) conductor. (mine is Thai style, as I bought the house already built) I have found that it is just impossible to convince some Thai, that knows better than any Farang, that an earthing conductor is just as important as a live conductor.

For evermore you are going to be very wary of going anywhere near that gate!
The first thing we did was call our regular electrician (who has done work for us for a while now) and he didn't want anything to do with it and told us to call the gate person. The wife has talked to the guy from Market Village now (the number Moja gave us) and he is going to give us a better motor (stronger and safer with a transformer to step the voltage down to a safe level should anything like this happen again) and he gave her a discount from the initial price. I will talk to him about the grounding. This one will also have battery backup so will work if the power is cut (our other one had to be opened manually if the power was off) so I should never have to touch the gate again!

BTW, my electric personality seems to have left me this morning as my hands and arms are feeling normal again, however, the missus had trouble sleeping last night from the light in the room due to the glow... :D

Yes, that is another way of doing it, but where is the transformer going to be mounted? If it is inside the drive unit then you still have mains voltage going into it and it needs protection and a gound wire just the same.
What type and where is the battery? Something else to fail just when you need it, so it should still incrporate an emergency release mechanism, just as you have now.

Glad that you are feeling better.

From the photos, it looks like the battery is installed in a waterproof plastic housing placed in or on the ground near the motor unit. I'm not sure yet but from the size in the photo I'm guessing that the battery is one of those 12v ones about the size of a motorbike battery (maybe they are the same). My house and perimeter alarm systems already employ 4 of those.
Glad that you are feeling better.
