I'm afraid, as has been mentioned, that the employment laws here are very discriminatory and....well....racist for lack of a better word. The 'top and tail of it' is that they simply don't want us to do anything as we are not welcome here in that capacity, probably due to the fear of us in general, hence everything being set up for us to fail in every possible way they can devise in almost all endeavours.

Admittedly, in tourist resort hotspots like HH then they are more over zealous as they have such fertile pasture to harvest and after so long they have simply become hopelessly corrupt.

Generally, apart from being a tourist/retiring/teaching/working for a multinational/opening a business for the wife there is nothing really for us to do plus you can't fart without a work permit and that permit only OKs work in one location unless you get more locations added to it at the Labour Department office.

You are, in general, only allowed to work in a job that a Thai cannot do properly, hence the number of English teachers around, Thais can't speak it sufficiently enough in sufficient numbers. When it comes to jobs the dimwits can do, then forget it.

There is zero latitude to their stern position on 'work' and it is a very wide illogical 'catch all' definition.

You might get left alone if you know the right people, rather like some property developers.

I think you should be careful whether you decide to play in your restaurant, probably unwise.

Spitfire basically sums the situation up...

Any type of activity that can be viewed as work requires a work permit. I have heard stories of people getting into trouble for doing their own gardening....not sure if true, but it wouldn't surprise me...

If you did get a work permit for farting, then farting is all you're allowed to do :D Although I fear Thai's are more than adequate at this, my better half certainly can handle a well balance and tuneful rip:D

Immigration are very active in Hua Hin and Bangkok, particularly for small unknown companies.

So, personally, I wouldn't risk it.
