The area we stay in was developed by my wife's family, some 15 years ago and we have two rental properties there, with a strict no pet policy.

The feral dog issue started soon after the completion of the development and it persisted up until six or so years ago.

The residence both full and part-time, predominately Thai, were constantly complaining about it and after trying numerous methods, I came across the ultra-sonic devices and at first I tried the motion sensor type, but no effect.

Thereafter all residence were informed of the likely consequences of the high powered constant operation units and there have been no complaints since.

I have to add I have never owned a pet of any description and my wife's family are the same, but in saying that I in no way condone cruelty to any animals, so I think the ultra-sonic is the ideal solution for people like us.

Thanks for clearing that up Dozer, and now I should also say well done for sorting the problem out in the way you have. Many people would employ far less humane methods.

Yes can't complain with that response. Can argue though that mentioning that such a device would be suitable to the OP is a little wrong.

Yep, point taken, but I do feel the frustration of people confronted with the issue.

Does anyone remember when dogs were described as "mans best friend". Seems the soi dogs do not enjoy that emotion.

Strangely enough I used to like dogs before I came to Thailand, I even had a couple as pets - Now I see them (soi dogs) as vermin. Do the Thais not have the sense of hearing ? They just seem to carry on watching their TVs or chatting away whilst old Fido yak-yaks at full volume right next to them.. Bloody amazing.
Another "bone" :) of contention is the stupid farangs who roll up in their cars and empty the remains of yesterdays dinner in the midst of a pack of soi dogs, right next to my bloody house - WHY ???

It's usually Thai people who do this. Have you asked them nicely to do it a bit further up the road?

To keep them away from their house?
As mentioned above, it's Thais that normally do this and it's a Buddist thing to do with a believe in reincarnation.
The fact of the matter with regards to street dogs is that they're highly territorial and the only real way of keeping them away is by having dogs of your own to take over that territory. Even if you adapt a couple of street dogs, if you feed them well they'll soon be bigger and healthier than all the rest and be capable of chasing them away.
I have to say that in all honesty, if you don't like dogs, you're going to struggle to be happy in Thailand unless you go and live in a tower-block condominium.

Lagojardin what you have to consider is that clearing your area of the vermin is a war of attrition, but if you persist you will succeed.

Sorry to correct you but I have seen farangs do this on more occasions than I have seen Thais do it AND I have asked them (I wouldn't say "nicely" why the hell should I?) to stop doing it.
If they want to feed the bloody dogs take them to their own house and feed them, or am I being too selfish ?

Strange logic you apply to this discussion !!! If you read my post again you may grasp that I do not like soi dogs !
Given that I dislike said dogs, why the hell would I want to adopt a couple!
I know all about "the Buddhist thing" so no lectures please.
I also have to say "in all honesty" I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and why should I struggle to be happy because I do not like the filthy packs of vermin that have taken over the sois?

Steve's absolutely right, and it's not his logic it's Thai logic (which is an oxymoron).

As you've been living here for 6 years you'll probably understand that it's an ongoing problem. The Thais don't like to castrate male dogs, and they often discard dogs once they've got past the cute puppie stage. Hence the packs of annoying soi dogs.

Have you tried contacting the local village head man for your area? They do sometimes round up annoying dogs and (hopefully) take them to a temple.

VS

PS: You could make friends with them, then you'd have a bunch of wagging tails when you turn up at your house... :D

My Father in Law told me the other day that a few years ago there was a guy who shot them with poison arrows out of a blowpipe, but he past away and unfortunately did not pass his skills on.
