As Guess posted, it is possible to get real quality furniture if you are prepared to travel a bit (to Burmese border areas, North or South). Stuff like solid teak kingsize beds, solid hardwood (mai macah) eight seater dining tables made from a single solid plank - 6000 Baht. Dining chairs to match - 600 baht each. There are still bargains if you have the time and inclination. Don't bother asking for proof that the timber is from a sustainable source though!

index seems to be a expensive version of Argos in the uk
I remember somebody mentioning that Index was a Thai company. I have always thought it to be the same company as Index in the UK which until recently was owned ny Littlewoods. It has recently sold the 33 remaing stores to GUS who are "surprise surprise" going to make them into Argos stores.
