I also think that the Embassies need to become more involved in addressing issues in Thailand (scams targeting foreigners, corruption, poor infrastructure, deaths of foreigners, etc.)
The Embassies need to be doing more than just simply 'Improving and furthering trade relations".
Pre-paid cards sound like 'the way forward'..that is until (even after explicitly informing the UK bank that you're gonna be travelling around Thailand)..your bank blocks the card after your first withdrawl!..this has just happened to a backpacking-customer of ours yesterday, just as she's about to set off for Malaysia.

I have a Bangkok Bank credit card. If I use it outside of any Hotel or major outlet, in Malaysia, they cancel it also. Malaysia has a terrible history of credit card fraud
