Speed cameras, limits, and tickets
Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
They obviously don't bother if you're on two wheels then...

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
Yes, you are right Buksi, the photos are taken from the front of the vehicle, so no need to worry if you're on 2 wheels.
Am seriously thinking of doing a bit of major shopping this week, so possibly will be able to exploit this facility quite soon also!

Part of the road to Bangkok is 120kph as my speeding fine was for doing 124kph in a 120 zone. However we have never been able to work out where the speed trap was as the rest of the photo was fuzzy.
Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
Maybe this was on the Kanchanapisek road, from Rama II through Suksawat, and over the river towards Samut Prakarn
I think some of this is 120 limit (I think they show the limit of the orange LED Signposts)
A fine for 124 in a 120 limit is a bit unfair I think.

I think you are correct about the area and we always slow down around there just in case! I agree the fine was maybe a bit unfair but rules are rules!!!

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
So i ask then, how do these cowboy minivan drivers make any sort of a profit? they sit on 130-150 all the time.A three hour trip to Swampy and back....how many camera shots?? Or maybe the camera has a well used delete button for them...
Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
I think, reading the earlier responses that the cameras, although mobile, are always set up in the same place. Therefore, the van drivers either know where to look to see if the camera is there, or they know where to slow down.

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
I came down from Bangkok on Sunday and there was one in the central reserve on Rama 2, about 10 Kms north of the Hwy 4 interchange. Never seen that before, the middle of the damn road! I have not seen the regular one about 10 Kms north of Phetchaburi for awhile now, so I think they do move around. For the van drivers they probably have a reporting network!Big Boy wrote:I think, reading the earlier responses that the cameras, although mobile, are always set up in the same place. Agree with Nereus, although the mobile camera do have regular spots (shady!), they do jump around a bit.
Have seen in Bangkok last week, a fixed camera on the elevated Bangna-Trad Expressway, shooting people from behind. Could see from a very long distance, as it was flashing and catching just about everyone.
As a warning, although it is a very good quality straight road, the speed limit is fixed at 80kph for its entire length. There is often a mobile camera close to the beginning (or end, depends which way you are driving!) of this road, near BITEC Area. Sometimes inbound, sometimes outbound, have been 'got' several times there.

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
Just to add my little bit to the list of camera-related tales on here...
On our way to Issan on Friday, as we were going thru' BKK the traffic was well snarled-up..Mrs U.S.
decided she would pay the extra toll & suggested we go 'upstairs', past Don wotsit Airport, & come back down topside of Rangsit..fair plan darlin'
As we get to the toll=booth at/above Rangsit I could see straight after the booths was at least 15 MIB! & LOTS of cars!
ALL taking money off just about EVERY vehicle!
It turns out (& I did not see/know this) but the speed limit past the airport (up on the 3 lane tollway) is 80kph..They fined me for doing 90. (which was what I was doing the whole way).
Now all these MIB had radios & were busy writing down Reg-No.s when not taking tea-money.
Our option (as stated by the Twat-in-Brown) was to pay 500B to him or 1500B with an issued ticket..
..well after a few strong words from Mrs US,
telling him in no uncertain terms that we were the slowest vehicle of all on the entire length, & 250B is all we have take it or leave it.
He was taken aback somewhat, but accepted the lesser amount.
As we came down off the Tollway & headed towards Saraburi Mrs US pointed to the (very new looking) banners stretched out in the centre-res.
These banners, at every 5/10kms were saying (only in Thai) that speed cameras were in operation and 500B fined would be imposed.
BUT..as many of you have stated here previous..NO signs telling you the max speed on that stretch of road..
Now on the way back today into BKK, (from Wang-Noi to Rangsit) no less than 3 roadblocks by MIB..again all with clipboards & radios (& pens)..pulling over selected vehicles..in all lanes.
IF ANY OF YOU ARE GOING UP TO ISSAN BEFORE SONGKRAN PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS.
(Also I know of 2 men from HH who have had postal-notification..one got 2 fines on the same day!)

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
To close the loop on my story, the second ticket never turned up, even though I was well in excess of the 90KPH speed limit. Worry now is what happens if that letter has become a victim of the Thai Postal system? I'm hardly going to walk into a police station and say that I was speeding on a certain day, but haven't received a fine.

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
I haven't been that way since they opened the Eastern Ring-road but that was very common on that stretch of road past Don Muang as the Highway Police HQ is past there on the left. The camera was always just behind the barrier and they even had a little roof to keep the sun off. Also the speed limit was always 80 kmh on that stretch to maximise the profit! On our way to Issan on Friday, as we were going thru' BKK the traffic was well snarled-up..Mrs U.S.

I used to get stopped often on that road but have never been on the Eastern Ring-road, so I would advise anyone to use that route even though it's 20 odd km further.
Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
Yes, you should not be going anywhere near Don Muang and the elevated Tollway. From Hua Hin get on to the outer ring road at the big interchange at the Bang Khae intersection. The same way to the airport, on the Suk Sawat expressway. It may well be 20 kms further, although I doubt it, but most of it is marked at 120 Km / hr. There are tolls, but I doubt that they amount to much more than the Don Muang way when you add them all together, and it is a lot less stressful.I haven't been that way since they opened the Eastern Ring-road.......................

Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
I clocked the difference the first time I did that route and it was something in the region of 20 km although it was a few years ago and I don't remember the exact figure, it's worth it for the lack of hassle from the police. I don't know if the Eastern Ring-road is a different juristriction or something of that nature but I've never been stopped on that route, maybe it's just too far from the Police station! It may well be 20 kms further,.....
