After reading a thead here some years ago, about the large water containers becoming tainted with other substances such as petrol, would not trust them. I do not doubt this as I hold my hands up as having brewed wine in similar containers in Saudi.
I have used RO filter system from Pure for the past 4 years, and have tested it using a kit brought from Canadian tire. Apart from lacking the minerals it is perfectly potable. To combat this problem just boil and add a tea bag, or from my RO filled cooler bottle I can add electrolite powder. It must be one of the safest systems if its used so that spacemen can re-drink urine!
Concerning water wasted in the RO process, yes it is water down the drain but is much cheaper than buying commercial water which is produced using the same system. Also more eco friendly as no plastic to dispose of. Remember some 15 years ago that Samui had concerns that there was nowhere left to dump empty plastic water bottles, hope they now recycle.
In my experience the Pure shop at the Palace traffic lights is seldom manned, the larger shop south of town usually is. Can be found on LH side of U turn under the flyover, before re-joining Petch road going north.

HOUSE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM
Re: HOUSE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM
It is interesting to see the different responses and approaches to drinking water. Does anyone know for sure how the water is processed for the various bottled or 25L sources. A good filtration system (non RO linked with a UV filter should provide safe and satisfactory drinking water). One would hope that the more expensive clear plastic bottles have water that has gone through a more thorough processing. With the current shortage of water the use of RO systems and what happens to the waste (perhaps fed to a tank and used for showers/toilets would be better than putting it down the drains). Ultimately the person using it pays for it so it is their choice however I think that if you can afford 30,000 on a filter that will need servicing regularly perhaps spending a bit more and having a second tank which is fed drinking water and feeding the residue to the main tank would be more considerate.
I do not want to appear anti RO but feel that when looking at filter systems consideration should be given to alternatives that may well be cheaper in the long run and more than suitable.
Slightly off topic but along the same lines, how many people check the source of the ice that is in their drinks? or the water that was used to wash the fruit they are eating?
