I was expecting an easy recovery dive ...
Holy blackout Batman ... 3 inches of visibility, 8 inches of slime, a ripping current, zero marine life, zero anything else - never ever ever ever go diving around Hua Hin!!!

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

Unfortunately no, you wouldn't have seen it if it was 2 feet in front of you.

Maybe one of those fish finding scopes could find it? I've seen them in many boats here. They highlight the fish and depth but also the topography of the bottom. I would think a metal outboard would stick out? Pete

I think that if it was me I would be changing the spelling of the "buoy"! Let him swim around until he finds it!barrys wrote:Does anyone know of a diver here who is available ...... like now!!!
Need to locate something dropped in the sea from a boat near Kao Kalok- position is marked by GPS and a buoy
How does an outboard motor "fall off"? It either was not mounted correctly, or they were trying to pull it inboard to work on or transfer it to another boat.
I am not a diver but have been involved in some weird salvage jobs over the years. I would suggest that you make up a grapple, a couple of feet wide made like a garden rake would do, and "fish" for it, especially if the bottom is as Buksida mentioned. Once you snag on to something then dive down and see if you have it. Good luck!
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

If Buksida can get the equipment, i would be willing to help him with a search and recovery. Unfortunately i only have my prescription mask over here.
Re: Need a diver in HH now
Barry you have the location marked as a waypoint on a GPS at low tide in a small dingy poke about with long bamboo sticks hit something a bit promising leave the stick there in the mud as a marker and repeat until you have enough of that area covered.
From that waypoint I bet it's within four metres of where you think then send your diver down.
Kendo.

Thanks to everyone for their tips and ideas - this is what I really like about this forum, i.e. when people genuinely try to provide help and support for fellow members.
Particular thanks to Buksida for coming all the way here and trying his best in the most adverse conditions!
So we presumed we'd never see it again..............
..... but a stroke a luck today!!
We'd put out the word to the local fishermen that we were looking for the motor and offered a reward, though if they found it they'd probably get a lot more for it in scrap value.
Well today, a prawn fishing boat owner contacted us to say they'd found our outboard.
Their nets had been snagged a couple of days running but they were able to free them - thinking it was rocks.
This morning, the net got snagged again, though, and they couldn't free it.
When they went down to have a look, they saw it was the outboard - and a fair distance from where it went down.
So round about noon, they pulled up at the marina in their boat to return the engine.
After 10 days in the briny, we didn't hold out much hope that it would still be usable.
However, after it was stripped down and flushed out with diesel oil and WD40, we found out that it had not seized - the moving parts are still moving!!
So it's off to Pattaya first thing in the morning to visit a Yamaha specialist to have all the seals and gaskets changed. Fingers crossed that it will work ok again after that

Re: Need a diver in HH now
Out of interest Barry how did it go splash in the first place wasn't it tethered to the transom.

I wasn't there Kendo - but apparently, the dinghy was being towed by the big boat, the weather kicked up pretty rough with high waves and the transom cracked and broke away with the motorkendo wrote:Out of interest Barry how did it go splash in the first place wasn't it tethered to the transom.
