All the usual Soi 102 negatives are out again! So just to put the record straight!

I live right on Soi 102, have done for the last six and half years and we have never been flooded on our property

Also in the last year the road has been resurfaced, all new storm drains installed, and the main klong by the railway line has been, cleared, widened, and cemented. So even less chance of any flooding risk now these improvements have been made.

Soi 102 is one of the better roads to drive along now.

There are a mixture of small businesses, restaurants and couple of bars along the stretch opposite the city yard.
None seem to be doing a roaring trade as such, but seem to have reasonable support from their regulars. ...well they have stayed open for a while now, where as others have opened and closed fairly swiftly.

I never had flooding where I lived, but like Paderborn said it is all being redone and is becoming one of the better streets.

Kurry Loa closed, not surprised, the owner, not a bad guy obviously regretted his decision to open it and was increasingly sour faced.
Have not been to 102 for some time--Is jack still at Squealing Pig?

This is one of the areas that comes up when searching for areas of HH that are supposed to be on the rise.

However, there seem to be some pretty negative comments in this thread when it comes to running a buisness in this particular area.

I've looked up the businesses mentioned in this thread and few seem to be still running. The Squealing Pig (AKA Rooms@102) mentioned immediately above has no entries on its facebook page since last year although the guest house side still has a web presence.

Is Soi 102 still a dodgy area business wise? If yes, are there more viable areas of HH that qualify as up-and-coming?

We're basically looking for an area where the rents or leases haven't gone silly yet on business premises as we don't want to invest too much on a "first rung" entry into living/working in HH. Equally not wanting an area that is considered too far off the beaten track or has too distant prospects of developing into a busier area.

I've given a little more background information over on the "Introductions" thread under "Hi all".

Your informed experience/knowledge would be very much appreciated.

Well I can speak positively for two businesses on Soi 102. 1) Power Fit 102 is one of the best run gyms I have come across any where. Dean is really conscientious and committed to health and fitness. He has worked with the rehabilitation of my wife after breast cancer and lymphatic surgery. He is both knowledgeable and alert to her needs. 2) 102 Physical Therapy Clinic. Again, working with my wife and her needs has done a very professional job on Lymphatic Drainage Massage. These two have made such a difference in her quality of life. So I would not say that Soi 102 is home to poorly run business. There are also several other businesses that I have visited that were positive experiences. They have connectivity to Soi 94 and Soi 88 without having to get on the main road. So I would not write this soi off. I hope you find this helpful as it is a true personal experience.
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

I have a friend of a friend who has a restaurant up there who maintains it is successful regarding local residential trade but is a bit out of town for most punters who dwell further north. Guess we are spoilt for choice in central HH and being a laid back bunch tend to limit our ventures out for vitals UNLESS a place is offering top notch grub.

Good place to live, not a good place to start a restaurant. Only one I see with a steady dinner trade is the German one, good food, pleasant owner, customers90% German.
Not a walking area, not an area where you drop in ( or Brits pop in) .
Now well connected by concreted road to 94.

Many thanks for the responses.
I have taken special note of Richard and oakdale160, very pertinent answers that are confirming what I have gleaned thus far.

At SunandFun, my very best wishes to you and your wife during her rehabilitation. Having had a brush with lymphatic cancer in the past I stand here now many years later. Keep up the strength.

Soi 102 crossed off the list...

BB

From Soi 94 take the turning at " Luciano's " that will then take you through to Soi 102....

Cannot give you a description of the 102 end..... But it will bring out onto 102 to the East of the gym.....

Thank you, I didn't realise the road had been finished. It was just a mud track a couple of weeks ago.

Bobby's has had a steady pub trade for years in two locations on Soi 102. You just have to know how to attract customers. It's called a "business plan" which is an alien concept to most people who start a business here, be it a shophouse bar, or a Venezia Mall.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

After 14 years of living here I am moving to soi 102 to rent a house, I think the soi has a good feel to it, great location fo getting around and tonnes of places to eat, looking forwar dto being near to Powerfit, I know they do Yoga there so I might use that as well as my usual place, I really cant see any downsides!

You gotta a big truck BB, use it!! I know you like it super clean so I understand!! Gotta say I hate my car being dirty.

Cheers all,

JW

 You obviously didn't read my Pranburi Dam Report
We’d never been. And as we were going to be in the area, we thought we’d have a look. Situated a few miles West of Pranburi, I found the dam on Google Earth, and put the co-ordinates into my SatNav. The road where I live is only registered as a dirt track on my SatNav, so I’m always asked if, “I want to avoid unpaved roads,” to which I have to say, “No,” else the SatNav can’t plot a route. This is not normally a problem, but…………….

Everything was going fine. We took a right at the 3rd set of lights through Pranburi, and the road seemed pretty good. However, quick glance at the SatNav and it said 6 miles to go, but those 6 miles would take 38 minutes. Then the inevitable instruction, “TURN RIGHT!!” I was on a dirt road, but it was still quite good, and a lot better than Soi 88.

I continued on the dirt track for about a mile, and the road become gradually worse. Then the instruction, “TURN LEFT!!” Of course, having a woman’s voice on my SatNav, I obeyed.

Well, this was a road (in the loosest sense of the word) like none I’d seen in Thailand before. The only thing I had seen similar were the roads used by Challenger tanks while on exercise with them on Salisbury Plain. My truck is big with large wheels, but these weren’t tyre tracks, they were more like First World War trenches. With my wife screaming in my ear, I was doing my best to keep an even keel, but the back end of the truck was swaying violently. I looked for a suitable place, and stopped the truck, as I stopped, the volume in my left ear reduced significantly.

I got out to assess the terrain. It was rough, but I felt that I could continue, However, the little voice in my left ear persuaded me to turn back. This manoeuvre would actually be a lot harder than carrying on (SatNav was telling me 325 Yards to the next road) i.e. carrying on meant I would carry on driving with the terrain. Turning around would mean a 3 point turn against the terrain whilst trying to avoid palm oil trees.

I did the manoeuvre and made my way back to the relative safety of the dirt track. The SatNav re-calculated, and took me straight to a proper road. My son and I had thoroughly enjoyed the little adventure, but my dear wife would not like the experience repeated. The rest of the journey was uneventful.
So with that comment JW, are you saying the road isn't finished yet?

Ok, I've just used the new road, and what asset it will be for me. If visiting my daughter it'll eliminate the need for 2 U turns on Petchkasem, and if coming home from the South on a weekend, I'll be able to turn of Petchkasem that much earlier, significantly reducing my travel home time.

A brilliant little rat run for me, that will certainly take me through Soi 102 much more often.
