Where to stock up on household goods?
Re: Where to stock up on household goods?
The public water fill machines that you'll find are only as clean/safe as the filters in them, and how often they're cleaned and/or changed. You're drinking city tap water that runs through a filter inside each machine. I don't know if there's some kind of ultra violet light to kill bacteria, or if the filters also remove heavy metals. If I had to rely on one for my drinking water, I'd do a lot more research as to what...who maintains etc. Pete

I'v used the water machines for 4 months with no problems. There are 2 in soi 80 and 1 infront of The Grand (night) market.
Have any of the regulars in soi 80 ever noticed how often the filters are cleaned/changed?!?

Don't forget there's also the free water point on Soi 94.

What's that? I thought all these machines were coin or bill operated?Big Boy wrote:Don't forget there's also the free water point on Soi 94.

There's a place on Soi 94 where a chap has a huge filter unit on his outside wall, and you can fill up your bottles for free. There's also a free place in front of Chatchai Market, Petchkasem Road side but I'm not sure whether you can draw off any large volume.
I've never tried either, but the one on 94 often has people using it.

Normal bottled drinking water is so cheap, can we seriously be talking about saving next to nothing by using street water vending machines .the savings are simply not worth the risk that the filters etc have not been changed.

As I said, I don't, but there's usually somebody filling up at the freebie on 94, and a fair proportion are Farang.
At the end of the day, do we know what is good and what is bad? Does a Singha or Chang label make the water any better? I buy it, but I certainly don't know.

We've been using them for 5 months no problems, and when you drink around 6lts a day that's a saving of 10,080 over 5 months! Now that's not to be sniffed at by ones on a budget! why pay more when you don't have to?!

The sanity of those machines have been questioned in many news articles...
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Well having done the Makro safari today, I'd say that for us it was worth the trip for the 2kg cheddar ingot which will be cut up and frozen, and a load of frozen fish and seafood much cheaper than Tesco (husband doesn't eat meat so we get through a lot). Also frozen parathas, red lentils and Indian spice mix. Many things were in too large packs for us, so I'm glad we got the basics at Tesco.
