I just happened to be crossing the tracks at the main crossing in the centre of town early yesterday evening and I looked up the tracks to the north and there were people wandering about all over the lines, there even seemed to be a food stall opperating there. Normally I go out later when it's dark so have never noticed the trackside living that seems to go on there.

Although I agree with all the comments about the non-safety of the train network here, despite all that, statistically it's still the safest form of travel in Thailand (not including air travel). That says a lot about other forms of transport....... Only in Thailand!

I have a morbid fear of level crossings, even in the UK, so you can imagine what I'm like here.

Whenever I cross the lines in daylight hours, I'm checking back and forth and there are always people wandering up and down. At dusk, most of them are carrying torches.
