Converting GBP to THB without high bank charges

I took the advice from a previous post elsewhere on here...
..& I went into my Thai bank, handed over my debit card & pazzy & took out/transfered 14,000B into my Thai account. No Thai ATM fees, & it worked out about £8 on a £300 withdrawl..then I used the Thai bank's ATM card to tap that money.
OK I maybe only saving on the Thai ATM fee, but that in itself can be knocking on the door of £4 each time.
(180B = 2 weeks fuel in my m/bike)..

I'd be curious to know what exchange rate was given compared to a telex transfer. Charges on small amounts such as this are probably insignificant but I doubt it's practical on much larger amounts.

Paying a sterling cheque into a Thai bank could well give a problem, because firstly they will want the cheque cleared within the banking system ( whether issued by HMGOVT or not) and this could take up to 4 weeks with the post, or get lost!

Yes with some Thai banks it can take up to 4 weeks to clear - but I used to pay my cheques into Bangkok Bank and because HMG is it's own guarantor the credit was available pretty much immediately. (Or was maybe the system has changed?)
But even if a monthly cheque does take a month to clear, after the first month you should still be into a regular cycle of payments.
