Ok, can you fill me in here? If you don't have a fridge, then your Chang is warm. I get that bit. But then where does the ice come from?

And I should add that I like Chang. I like Chang a lot. In fact, as with most things Thai, I get withdrawal symptoms when I'm back here in Farangland. But after 2 or 3 weeks of drinking it (and singha, and leo, and archer), a Carlsberg Export seems irresistable.

Tonight I shall drive back to Reading, sit on my patio and drink ice cold Stella. Without ice. And wish I was in Hua Hin.

Actually, most village houses that I know do seem to have a fridge but they are usually teetering on the edge of capitulation and the Thais just don't stock beer in them.

So, instead, you send one of the 8 year old nephews off to the shop, where they have a freezer full of bags of ice but no cold beers! Chances are that if the nephew is a bit older, say 10, he will drive his dad's moped and take three or four younger cousins along for the ride!

Much clearer now, thank you.

But the moped still seems a bit light. There's room for grandma, a goat and the last fortnight's laundry.

There's a tale to be told here maybe, that probably fits well with "Amazing Thailand". I think Carlsberg entered the market here without any BOI backing, and immediately went into partnership with Thai beer Singha or Chang, I don't remember which?

When they saw "the baby" Carlsberg, was outselling "the parents" they pulled the plug concerning shared brewery capacity. Carlsberg went home.

Very similar, or exactly the same as to why Beer Lao isn't sold here, it would cut the Thai beer market in half, or more.

More than a year ago I heard that Carlsberg Corp. was constructing their own brewery here in LOS, things have since gone silent. No clue as to what is happening?

Aren't all these threads similar? Just change "property" to "beer" or some other item that is perceived as a threat to the "norm" and what do you get....massive xenophobia. Pete

Ice in Chang is Ok BTW, as long as you drink it quickly and don't let the beer get watered down. When eating slimy stinky stuff in The Village, Chang with ice is preferable to warm Chang!

I’m with you on that one Jaime, I find the trick is to put a fist sized chunk of ice in a half litre glass, and drink it quickly like you say, used to do the same thing with Bintang in Indonesia. I never drink chang in Hua Hin but when I’m in the boonies its all you can get without an hours drive. Chang with ice is preferable to a night in the villiage sober!

The thing is that villages don't prioritise.
The house can have plasma tv screens, dvd players, 4 wheel drives and motorbikes parked up everywhere, but no fridge.
What's the use of a fridge? To keep your food? No, because everything's shot, caught, picked and eaten fresh that day.
A fridge? Na, the shop down the dusty track has got one. We don't need it.
I've now got two in my house. The first for silly things like food etc. The second for my beer.
I spent too much time up country years ago and the second fridge is a luxury I decided to afford myself.
LOL.
