In 8 years, I've only ever been asked once - and that was for a more rigorous check as well. Imm were looking at the farangs they knew had been here for some time.
I never carry any ID with me. If they do start clamping down here, I don't think it'll be a good reflection on the town, although it is the law. Can you imagine all the tourists on, or going to, the beach? "Where's your passport?" - "In my hotel room safe/at home". It would be a compromise if they gave say 24/48 hours to produce, like if stopped in the UK driving and you don't have your licence with you. Easy.
BTW, what's the fine if you're caught?

Is the general opinion that a copy is enough if you were asked then?

Sorry if my remarks re ID and Passports seemed a little pessimistic but I have friends who have been topped in their cars and asked for Passports and papers. One on his way down from bK the other driving into town down naebkehard.

I think it may depend on the time of the month!!!

On a bus from Trat to Bangkok, leaving Trat it was the Thais that got asked for ID when the police came on the bus not farangs.
Presume its because its close to Cambodia and the Islands, checking for Illegals.

Anyone ever had a problem after prebooking a double room and turning up with your Thai girlfriend?
i.e Treating you like you've just picked her up from a bar before arrival.
Just a thought if the hotel/guesthouse fancys trying to extract a bit of extra cash from you.

The reason I ask is because I was reading online reviews of a nice looking hotel in Chiang Mai but a few of the reviews suggested the Thai reception staff treated Thai guests as second class.
Just made me think twice about booking with what otherwise looks a very nice and well priced hotel.

The last time I came back from the UK, 2.5 years ago, i had prebooked a hotel in BKK by fax for one night. I explained that my gf, now wife, was coming up from HH. We arranged that I would arrive before her, which was the case, but in the event that I was delayed, the staff knew her name and of course she had ID.
We were having a couple of beers in the coffee shop before going out to meet an old friend. My gf had her elbow on my shoulder (we hadn't seen each other for 3 months) and the old lady battleaxe of a Thai manager of the coffee shop walked through and yelled at my gf not to act like that.
Well, we asked for the bill in due course and it came with a copy of a typewritten note saying that the hotel found our behaviour unacceptable and we were being asked to leave immediately. If we didn't, the police would be called.
I went beserk at reception. everyone knew me, I'd stayed there many times before and it was ironed out and we weren't chucked out on the street.
Disgusting. I've never stayed there again and never will.
BTW, it was that last bastion of "clean living" hotels that even then was slowly crumbling into the ground - The Atlanta at the bottom of Suk, soi 2. :guns: :guns:

There have been several incidents when I have arrived back at a hotel late at night with my wife that security have tried to obtain my wife's ID card before allowing her in to our[/] room for the night. I understand why, but I always make a point of having a serious rant in front of whoever is listening/watching. If it happens a second night, it normally results in a very serious rant - if the manager will not compensate me in any way, then I make sure I check out the following morning.

I've learned that when you have a baby or toddler in tow, they never question the woman at check in or throughout the stay, or even ask for ID...good thing too. Perhaps BK can confirm when he has gone on hotel stays with his clan. Maybe a business opportunity...rent-a-baby?!   Pete
