Re: Fish & Chips
I thought the chips were reasonably chunky and nothing like the frozen chips shown in the latter photo with the sloppy peas.
I had fish and chips in the UK recently and size wise, I’d say the chips were of a similar size - they obviously do them differently in Plymouth!!

Also take note that cod is not always "cod". What I mean is that the likes of Viking Siam serves f&chips with cod imported from Norway, I.e. North Atlantic Cod. This one is quite different than the Pacific type which is sold by Macro among others. I do not know where Zebweer gets their cod from.
You guys should really try the bacalao/bacalhau. Really yummy!

Re: Fish & Chips
I didn't slip them in, I am having some problems using the forum. I tried to edit my post to add my pics, but it just kept throwing me out and sending me back to the main menu, same thing just happened on the pizza thread just now. I tried to use the quote function, and it just took me to the main menu.
Edit - now seeing I was able to reply okay here, I have no idea what is happening.

Oh, MS Edge is my go-to browser when Chrome doesn't work.
It might be worth trying a different browser if one is playing up though.

I don't know either, but it's the same cod and haddock that is served in the UK. It must be widely available through one distributer or another, as you get the same in various places in Hua Hin, Bkk and even my favourite western food place in Khon Kaen sells it.

The owner of Zabwer (same as owns Burgers & Beer on 2nd floor Market Village) prides himself on sourcing ingredients, we've talked about his sausages in another thread before. His wife is a really good cook, both farang and Thai. A nice big lamb shank too, with mash.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Sat Jul 15, 2023 1:58 pmcaller wrote: ↑Sat Jul 15, 2023 1:27 pmI'm a regular at Zebwer and often eat Haddock and chips, the cod is served with two pieces of fish and that is too much for me. And sometimes, I find the cooking a little uneven, the haddock is always spot on. Big portions as well. Never had real chips though. Here's that day's Haddock at Zebwer:HHTel wrote: ↑Sat Jul 15, 2023 1:17 pm Being a lover of fish and chips, I'll have to try that. Until now my choice has been the Zebwer on Soi 112. 2 x large cod fillets in batter and served with real chips. Again, not cheap (around 400 baht) but excellent imo.
There is an option of haddock but I'm a cod guy.
The chips aren't haute cuisine as has been said, but good in a soft roll with salt and loads of vinegar as a snack.

The best chips I get in Hua Hin are from Angie's Bistro in Soi 80. To die for, I have them as a shared starter with sauce boats of tomato ketchup and mayonnaise. No desserts here, so fill up with the rest of the menu!

I've never heard of Angies Bistro, but must be worth an excursion if real.

I have....Big Boy wrote:I haven't tried it yet, which is a bit embarrassing as it's only 600 yards from my front door, but the Fish and 'real' Chips at Cocktails & Dreams on Soi 94 has been getting a lot of very good publicity recently, and it's only about half the price of Viking.
Has anybody tried it? Do you agree/disagree?
It's OK nothing special but decent enough
If its half the price of Viking then that's about right
I went to Viking when it opened.... very good but top dollar
A better option for me is Orayas in town( very close to Murphys) on the little Soi leading up to Hilton(behind Limelight bar)
Their F&C are superb with proper hand made fresh chips. Fish is fresh White Snapper(not frozen cod). Mushy peas and tartare sauce are spot on.
Cost is 290 including a large soda so maybe 240/250 alone
Highly recommended but think it might be Fridays only as everything fresh

Re: Fish & Chips
Ps to my last post
Apparently another good fish and chips option is Gary at Sabai Sabai(ex Le Pub chef) just off Soi 102 next to Suk Sabai 1 and Shush Bar
Not done myself yet but on the list
Closed Tuesdays
Equally Raffertys in Smorprong supposed to be good I heard

Very good fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce, in Cha Am at Dee Beach Cafe, 200 baht

Re: Fish & Chips
I assume it tastes better than it looks - the half slice of dry toast looks most unappetising and personally, I’d prefer to go without the salad garnish - I’ll leave the comment about the frozen chips to others!!
Re: Fish & Chips
Must admit the photo doesn't do it credit, but the fish is very good and the salad goes nicely with it.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 2:13 pm I assume it tastes better than it looks - the half slice of dry toast looks most unappetising and personally, I’d prefer to go without the salad garnish - I’ll leave the comment about the frozen chips to others!!
Each to their own taste

Re: Fish & Chips
I've been going there for 7 years, it's evenings only, on the corner of the last small Soi on the left at the top before the railway road. Not open before probably 5pm but you can book. Good to check in advance anyway as it might be closed on the odd occasion the chef goes to Bangkok for a day or two. Great liver and bacon, and very decent Massaman and spicy Penang curries (ask for your preferred 'ped' level, 70 pct is enough for me). English well spoken by all except the Brummie owner (joke) who makes a short appearance every night for a beer around 8.00 to 9.00. Nice place except pretty quiet these days, ask for one of his 1960's cd's if too quiet.Big Boy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 9:55 amReal chips?404cameljockey wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 9:47 am The best chips I get in Hua Hin are from Angie's Bistro in Soi 80.
