Apparently this mad sounding approach actually works, there is a whole town in Holland now with no road markings and the accident rate has dropped. In several accident black-spots in the UK recently, they have removed all road markings. The theory being that the confusion will cause people to slow down, and take more care.
There are four of these near me, its true, no pavements, allocated parking areas - not just along the kerb, but facing the curb, at an angle. Its great, you can really go for pedestrians as you take the chicanes this arrangement has created, especially when a car is coming from the opposite direction - you get them squeezed right in against the gardens!!!
I'm surprised no-one has been killed!
