Thailand has always had a pretty high murder rate, nothing new there.
Smile, be polite and its most unlikely you will get the chop.
"Red Light" area? Puh-leez!
The ones who get in trouble are the ones who manage to find it anywhere they go. Their problem is that in Thailand it can be bigger trouble than they might have had in mind. Loud mouths and tough guy attitudes are best left back home.
And fighting over a bar girl is pretty silly, isn't it?

It is thought that the Thai man that got shot was due to a personal matter. He was a kind man & I'm very sorry to hear of his death.

Whether expats are aware of it or not, all of Thailand (not just Hua Hin) can be a very dangerous place if you frequent the "wrong" places or mix with the "wrong" people. Most farang manage to keep out of this, though. I don't think Hua Hin has become any more dangerous, in general, as long as you stay away from the dodgier characters - of any nationality.

Maybe, as Guess was saying on the other thread, they young are becoming more disrespectful, and maybe there are more dodgy farangs around, but, in general, I think the undercurrent has always been there - the same as in any town in Thailand.

Is this a further "sign of the times"?

Couldn't get the link to work, is in reference to the Bank robbery by the 'farang'?
Violence in Thailand is a strange thing in many ways, it usually starts over nothing in a majority of cases.
I was on Koh Tao with a paranoid diver buddy, he was convinced some guy in this bar we were drinking in was staring at him. Now I'd had hardly anything to drink at this point and could clearly see this guy was not staring but try telling it to this paranoid guy... he was nuts!
If I go to a bar to hang out these days I am very much the grey man, I listen and watch and as a rule nobody (farang) hassles you. I think when you get people who bring attention to themselves a lot and booze this is when they get into trouble.
The boozed-up, loud mouthed brigade may get away with it in sleazy pattaya and Bintabahn etc. But if they went up country and acted the same they'd probably end up in big trouble with the locals.

It appears that Bangkok Post has pulled it.

It was about the Thai wife of an expat real estate agent on Koh Samui that was murdered. A man walked into their office, asked for her by name, and when she responded pulled out a gun and shot her three times. She died on the way to the hospital if I recall correctly.

Yep, you're right Nereus, I read the story as well. The husband is a German developer there. There was a follow up article in today's paper. I've found with the BKP that their links go dead after 24-48 hours. I think you have to then go to their archieves and register to get in. Pete

The way i see it, it's a bit like mosquito bites - we've all been bitten all over the world in all sorts of places, cities, beaches, countryside but you just don't know where or when that Malarial mozzie will strike. Could even be in your own home whilst watching your favourite film. But there are still precautionary measures you can take against even the humble mosquito - but do you want to choose to take them?

Like redzone says, I still feel more comfortable walking down the street in many foreign towns/cities rather than my own high-street in the UK. I guess we each need to weigh up the things in life that really matter to us and whether the end result justifies the risk(?) in attaining that dream.

Stay safe
