issan girls

Post by lindosfan1 »

Interesting topic I discussed this with my wife who is from Bangkok.
This is a summary of what she said. It gives an interesting slant.
The education system the way it is funded more money should should go to the poor area I.E. Issan. only one or two teachers and no technology or books in schools.
This gives the pupils from Bangkok an advantage,
When the Issan girls are educated there is little employment for them. This leads to an us and them syndrome, which starts from a young age.
My wife does not look down on the Issan girls or bar girls, what she does dislike intensely is the bar girl who has one man sending her money and then still works the bar. This I think we can all agree with.
Therefore the girls have different aspirations what a girl from Bangkok regards as normal a girl from Issan or other poor areas regard as luxury.
This is why if a girl from a poorer area has a chance to advance herself by marrying a western man they will work harder at achieving this.
What she does do now we are here is help some of the Issan girls with their emails as their English is bad.
There will always be in any country snobs but we both agree that the Issan girls good people.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

My wife is from Cha Am area so. like others, not much to add on Issan ladies, other than my wife doesn't generalize on lazy/ not lazy, etc, only on the differences in food.

But the BKK comments sure seem similar to large cities around the world. Here in California Los Angeles, and Orange County (the 'gold coast') attract people from all over, many trying to fit in with the 'in crowd'. I've known many young ladies who spend all there money (and then some) on clothes, cosmetic surgery, etc, all to attract a rich Californian.

Lots of age differences here too!

It really gets up my nose when people, put down Isaan people,as just poor farmers that are a bit stupid, i have had this said to me by friends and other farangs "o the GF or wife is a bit stupid dont really understand to much" yes many are disadvantaged with schooling or real employment training but there willingness to learn and adapt to western ways is fantastic, and you can not blame anyone for wanting to better there lives.
The Bangkok Thais (white thais) think they are far more educated and of a much higher class than Isaan (black thais) because they work in farming and building and there for, much darker skin, this is why a lot of Thai woman hate being in the sun they really do try to cover up when working on building sites or on farm land and they are obsessive about slaping on the sun lotion, they just belive the whiter they can make themself the higher class they will be.I allways tell my wife "just be yourself dark is beautifull please dont worry about trying to change" i think many people would agree with me, Isaan people are bloody good looking, suai.
My wife has been in the U.K for well over 2 years she can read and write and speak english fluently and use a computer, she had to pass the life in the U.K test wot was a major thing to do because its so hard even for me to pass the mock tests, her next thing is learning to drive after her holiday to thailand. It has been an absolute pleasure to see my wife reaching her full potential,i am very proud of her.She workers very hard and is assistant manageress of a big food pub she is very popular and all my friends and locals love her, she is very carefull with money and supports her sons and mum, she allways tells me " i am very proud of myself" i think she deserves to get good because all she ever does is good, and she would make any man very happy.
You do here these horror storys about old farangs with girls a quarter of there age, that sinario is never going to work, and all fool them, but the girl is allways going to get the blame, or you get some farangs come to LOS and think they Know everthing about Thai people and culture and say patronzing things like "at least the poor Isaan people will have a cow to fall back on" i have never read so much crap on this forum than that.I think i know a bit, about everything Thai but i am no expert,i am allways trying to gain as much Knowlodge as possible to prepare myself for the big move one day.I know many Isaan people here in the U.K and have made many friends up in Surin, Building our house was a great experiance, it made me realise that Isaan people are very clever and resorcefull and very hard working i can not falt wot they have done for us.I think many people on this forum have Isaan GF or wifes,so if you get some smart arse that wants to speak in a patronizing way i am sure other posters will have there opinion.I belive Isaan people are the real Thai people, these bangkok middle class thais dont really have much intrest in farangs anyway.
Well this is my take on Isaan folk more comments please.
Buksi, wot is the take from the south are they looked down on from these snooty elite bangkok types. :D

Kendo,
Thats a top post ! You must be very proud of your wife.
My wife is also from Isaan. We lived in the UK for two years and in that time she went to college to learn english and also did waitressing jobs at the local Holiday Inn and Thai restaurant.
I remember in 2005 that she had never seen snow before. She saw it for the first time in November of that year and it was still snowing the following April ! The coldest winter for 40 years so I think she was a bit fed up of the snow by then !
But the summer of 2006 turned out to be one of the hottest summers for years. So in the two years she was in the UK she saw the extremes of the British climate instead of the usual months of mild rain !
I think two years of the UK was enough for her though so now we are back in Thailand (just hope they dont increase the visa restrictions on farangs).
You cant really generalise about groups of people but I find Isaan folk very friendly.....maybe because there arent that many farangs in that part of the world.

Ha ha kendo, might have to call him 'Buksi the fence sitter' on this one.

Never know, maybe he's too busy 'laying it down' on the health and shopping forum till this thread goes away.

Just joking Buksi. :D

My wife only see the first proper snow 2 months ago, we have only ever seen a dusting,"we dont really get snow on the south coast" my wife was so excited she could not stop looking out of the window, and then we had to go out side like a pair of ten year olds and have a snow ball fight.
If you and your mrs intend to come back to the U.K look on the net about the life in the U.K test its difficult but not impossible.

Great to hear some heart warming stories of positive and successful relationships .I have only had one Thai Girlfriend (current) whom many posters know .She is an absolute diamond and an invaluable asset to my business .Why do Issan girls get picked on as lazy over other girls ? Ever had to wake up a shop attendant in Hua Hin just to get grunted at whilst they serve you before going back to falling asleep in front of the TV ? I've even had this happen when I have come to pay large amounts for materials .Also why are the women usually the targets of such comments ?

Are the men all lazy, alcoholic gamblers and womanisers that cheat, lie and steal at every available oppurtunity ? Or not ? If you are not sure then try asking some of the women for some input .Most that fit into the above category appear to have joined the police force .Any thoughts anyone ?

Kendo -

Like everybody else here, I can only congratulate you on your unrivalled choice of wife. Well done!

The thought that in only a couple of years her command of the English language, along with all its nuances, a bit of spelling, and some of its grammar, could so easily rival yours, speaks volumes.

Nice one son!

Good point Crazy88, must be true to a certain extent, maybe some of the girls can enlighten us on that one.

Mrs Cornhole is from Issan and is incredibly clean and hard working, a lot more so than me. She is also very kind especially when I am dying with a slight sniffle.... :|

Mrs BB is from Isaan also. She has been living in the UK with me for almost 20 years. I could not have made a better choice.

Her mother died when she was very young, and she had to give up school to look after her sisters, and latterly brothers from subsequent marriages.

Within a couple of years of our marriage I had to break her ties with the North East because demands for money became so ridiculous - she had a nervous breakdown that saw her in and out of mental institutions for 2 years, during which time our love for each other never faltered. I'm pleased to say that once the doctors got the medication balance right, she has been fine ever since.

When we met, her command of English was just enough for us to communicate properly. This improved rapidly, although her reading and writing of English is barely passable. Her proudest achievement was passing her driving test.

Fortunately there was no UK Citizenship test back then. To gain her naturalisation, she simply had to swear allegiance to the Queen - something she would only do if it didn't include John Major. She would never have passed the current test, and it is full credit to Kendo's wife and any others that do - they are in a significant minority.

My wife has held down several jobs over the years eg sewing machinist, care assistant, school lunch-break supervisor to name a few. Her work has always been well respected by employers, and they have always been sorry to see her move on. I know this bit will be controversial, but is in complete contrast to the lazy crowd in her village, where at busy times they do 1hr maximum work per day.

She gave up work a few years ago to become a full time carer for my father in his latter years. Towards the end, she had to do everything for him, but would not hear any suggestion that he should be moved to a nursing home. This is something that I will be eternally grateful for, and I truly believe that my father was very grateful as well.

We have quite a Thai community (predominantly Isaan, but a couple from Bangkok, and the South) where we live, and we're often treated as the village elders by all of them. Whenever there is a problem they often turn up at our doorstep, and we've often given refuge whilst making alternative arrangements. We've become involved in a few legal tangles.

Regarding regional differences amongst Thais in 'Our Bristol Village', I don't believe there is a trend. To me, it is the overall upbringing that counts. If the lady can cook, she's probably had the right upbringing, and will make an excellent, dedicated wife. If she was put into prostitution by her family at an early stage, she will lack the social skills required of a wife. In this instance she will either work at it very hard and succeed, or remain the good time girl, which will be great for a couple of years, but will probably end in disaster.

I am very happy with my lot.
