The one at Gifs is frozen fish from Makro so I think Pangus (spellIng?) but I am sure some buy from the market but all similar nice taste.

I never post negative comments about any local restaurant if I have a meal which is disappointing since it could be a one-off experience; a chef that is simply tired, or any number of reasons for that matter. If on the other hand I order the same dish on two or three occasions, and it's disappointing each time, then I think there's nothing wrong with me mentioning my opinion on here.

So, in my opinion, the F&C at Gifs is not very good at all. It might be for some, but certainly not to my liking. Having read Pagey's post which mentions the type of fish used at Gifs, I now understand why I did not like it. "Pangus" (Pangasius) is actually a farmed fresh water fish, which if you ask me, makes it unsuitable for F&C.

Even so, I bought some at Makro and used if for making F&C in order to see if there's a way to make it suitable. :D I tried regular batter, I tried beer batter, and I tried crumbs. On all occassions the fish was allowed to thaw in the fridge, and was then left to sit out for a few hours. Each batch was nothing like it is when I use salt water fish. So, I've come to the conclusion that this fish is simply not suitable for F&C.

Also, unless I'm getting confused, these fish are raised on pellets, and that in itself puts me off. I already have to eat chicken raised on pellets and pork coming from pigs that are fed questionable diets, so I really don't need to eat artificial fish as well. :D

If the owner of Gifs reads this, please know that I'm not knocking your place. It would be nice though if you could use a different type of fish.

Absolutely - it is Pangasiidae - Pangasius hypophthalmus - Sutchi / Striped Catfish or Pla Sawai as the Thais call it.

Quite tasteless for F&C in my opinion.

Sea Bass or Red Snapper is the nearest to 'Cod' that you will get here and makes fine F&C

Don't know what people see in cod tho - much preferred 'Rock Salmon' also known as 'Huss' or 'Dogfish' - i.e. a species of Shark :run:

Best I have had is from Pla Chong! awesome meaty fish. For sure Sea bass or snapper are great too. What I do see many times is that the fish is not seasoned before cooking...

I have just consumed the best fish and chips I have ever tasted - ever ever! As a take away from this wonderful place on the harbour here. Finished with one of the best ciders I have ever drunk!

Mind you, its quite a way for you folks in HH to get to!

The only improvement could have been by having, as Terry said, Huss, but thats a London thing.....

Thanks for confirming that Terry. Is the owner of Gifs a Farang? If so, can someone please tell him/her to behave themselves and stop using pellet fed nonsense for F&C.

JW, do you get Pla Chong at the wet market or is it best to try Makro? Red Snapper usually seems to be available so will try that as well.

Pla Chong - don't know it, as such

My knowledge of Sea fish is somewhat limited - I'm a little better with freshwater 8)

In the local freshwater varieties there are Pla Chon and Pla Tjon - the names for Murrel or Snakehead as pictured below

Do you mean these or is there a nice sea fish tat I don't know about!

Chon are very popular with the local folk and are a very meaty fish. Easy to buy in the markets.

Having tried them on the BBQ, they're not too bad but in my view a bit bland on the flavour.

If eaters knew more about cod, then I guess they would never touch it again. Cod is riddled with worms. Not just some.... all of them. Plus cancers etc. These of course are killed in the processing and cooking.
My mother worked for some time in Bird's Eye and told me of the cancers and worms in cod. She's never eaten cod since.
Red Snapper and Barracuda here are great for F & C. As a recommendation, Mr. Mons in 112 does excellent fish and chips. Two large steaks and all for, I think, 180 baht!

:agree: but no batter.

EDIT: Terry, that snakehead would look a lot more appetising without the hairy nipple...

With all due respect DM, you could be a tad more forgiving. Looks more like a comb over for those with a lack of chest hair....

New F&C place on soi 80

Using Linda's piece of spare land, Coconuts Canadian Jim has opened up. Initial feedback is it's quite good but no way anything like Barry's

Here's a pic but it may get zapped as it shows o/s menu and prices

Mod Edit: So why post it if you know it contravenes our T&C's. :banghead:
