Requiem for a Dream - 2000
Drugs. Four lives. Four addicts. Four failures. The End. So why watch another film about addicts circling the drain as they flush their lives away? The director and the actors combine with the script to make this the most brutal example of the sub genre. One reviewer praised the depiction of addiction: Conveys, visually, sonically and dramatically, the siren call of addiction like no other movie has. , they all called out the consequences, for example, "Dream" glamorizes nothing en route to a near-nauseating finale, which feels like a rollercoaster car hitched off the track and hurtled into hell's depths. A decade later, it still follows through with full force on its cautionary stomach punch.
Ellen Burstyn gave the performance of a life time in 'Dream'. People our age know her from playing Alice in 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore' and the mom in 'The Exorcist'. 'Dream' was one of her 5 Oscar nominations for Best Actress.
I saw it because I wanted to see what else Jared Leto has done before he gave the performance of a lifetime as Rayon in 'The Dallas Buyers Club'. He's delivered damn good supporting performances in a variety of films: 'Fight Club', 'Panic Room', 'American Psycho' and more.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky. He relies more on visuals than dialog to tell the story. His films (e.g. 'The Wrestler', 'Black Swan', 'Noah') sometimes are nominated for major awards, sometimes they're called art, 'Dream' did both.

Re: Movies on DVD
Being bed-ridden for the past 6 days (yup... someone had an alcohol free Songkran - I wonder where I can collect my prize?) I got through a load of movies some new some older. As usual, the links to download the movies are there through the best and most reliable free download site there is. The links will have a choice of HD1080 or HD720. Just click download and (as long as you have downloaded uTorrent or the like) away you go.
Up first is Lone Survivor .
Based on a true story, a team of four U.S. soldiers are given a mission to take down a Taliban target. They get dropped up in a mountainous area surrounding their target's compound. Unfortunately, their hiding place is compromised and what follows is a full on assault by the Taliban. As the title says, only one gets out of it alive.
I generally steer clear of war movies as the depiction of what happened is somewhat biased and in some/many cases... lies. When Marky Mark's in the movie though, I can't resist.
I really enjoyed this and liked the photos/videos at the end of the movie of the people that actually suffered through what must have been a horrible ordeal.
A full three cheers on the Sandman Scale for me.

Next up is Project X. I loved this movie!
A trio of kids riding high on the 'loser scale' in regards to their popularity at school, try to make an epic house party to get their names on the map. This is done 'found footage' style (Blair Witch, Paranormal...) following the kid’s preparations and wild times at the party. Of course everything gets completely out of control. You watch this and can imagine it happening so very easily in today's world...
A great movie. Three cheers all the way.

This next one is bizarre. Antichrist.
During love making, a husband and wife lose their only son when he falls out of his bedroom window. Harassed with grief the mother is put on lots of medication until the father (William Defoe) decides to treat her himself without drugs. To do that he thinks that he must get his wife to face her worst fears.
The most disgusting (not in a good way) and bizarre movie I've seen since watching some of the horrors from the late 60’s - 70's. Filled with nudity, sex, genital mutilation and craziness, this movie is absurd.
I didn't enjoy it. It's very different . I suppose it's meant to be artistic in a way, from the cinematography. I give it none out of 3.

A horror movie next in Patrick. I'm getting lazy now so I'll just copy and paste. The movie wasn't too bad as far as recent horror films go. I'll give it 1.5 cheers out of 3 on the Sandman Scale.
After killing his mother and her lover some years before, Patrick is the comatose patient in room 15 of a remote, private psychiatric clinic.
When a young nurse begins work at an isolated psychiatric ward, she quickly becomes fascinated with Patrick, a brain dead patient who is the subject of a mad scientist's cruel and unusual experiments. What starts as an innocent fascination quickly takes a sinister turn as Patrick begins to use his psychic powers to manipulate her every move, and send her life into a terrifying spiral out of control.

Finally a bit of excellent light hearted fun in We're the Millers.
A small time weed dealer gets his money and produce stolen from him so his boss makes him go off to Mexico to haul a ton of weed back in for him. To do this successfully, the small time weed dealer makes up a small 'family' out of himself and a few people he knows to join him in an RV so as not to look suspicious.
This movie is hilarious. All casting is superbly done AND you get to see the lovely Jennifer Aniston strutting her stuff in her role as a stripper.
3.5 cheers from me on this one. Great stuff.

Thanks for reminding me about this movie Homer. I hadn't watched it since it came out, but your post made me download it and watch it again. It is a very good watch. In some parts a hard watch, mind.Homer wrote:Requiem for a Dream - 2000

MANGAL PANDEY: THE RISING
I love costume dramas, and foreign films, so this is a bit of a perfect storm....even if, as its an Indian film, it has the obligatory Bollywood eye popping song and dance numbers scattered through it.
The film tells the story of Mangal Pandey, one of the leaders/catalysts of the Indian Uprising of the mid Victorian period. Mangal is a popular NCO in the East India Company's sepoy army of occupation in India, and after saving his English officer in a tribal skirmish in the Northern Territories along the Afghan border becomes close friends with the officer, who unlike his Old School colleagues has risen through the ranks and "gone native". When the old muskets are phased out and new rifles issued, rumors abound that the cartridges are greased in animal fat. At the behest of his friend Mangal literally bites the bullet to try to defuse the fears of his fellow sepoys, only to then find the rumors are true. In disgust and anger he then leads the mutiny that will eventually spark off the larger Indian Uprising.
Veteran Indian actor Aamir Khan returned to the screen to play Mangal, and does so with great aplomb, nobly supported by Toby Stephens as his English friend. Its epic and stirring stuff, and even the odd segue into big production all singing all dancing Bollywood numbers at a few points didnt spoil it for me.
Top quality stuff if you fancy something a bit spicier on the menu....Sharpe fans will like it. Out and about in lovely crisp DVDRIP formats, or if you want a hi rez online watch with full subs then visit http://yify.tv/rising-ballad-mangal-pandey/ (as with YouTube hit the CC button on the player for subs).
A solid three cheers keeper

THE PHYSICIAN
Nice little medieval potboiler about a young boy who learns, as his mother dies, he has the power to be able to tell when a person is about to die. His mothers death leaves him determined to be a healer, and so he joins a Barber Surgeon as an apprentice, only to be disappointed at the western worlds ignorance of medicine. On their travels he learns of a famous medical school in Isfahan, but there is a problem. Only Muslims and Jews can attend. So, adopting the mantle of a Jew he sets off to find his fortune and learn, only to find himself plunged into conflicts over which he has no control.
Its a great little adventure/romance flick which covers the conflicts between East and West, Science and Religion, and the conflicts between different faiths. Theres a stellar performance as always by the wonderful Ben Kingsley, and the rest of the cast is up to scratch as well. Where AGORA had astrolabes, this has scalpels and Black Death.
I liked it, and it ably scores a two cheers and a smiley. Definitely well worth a drop and a watch.

Saw 'The Railway Man' yesterday. Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman play Eric and Patti Lomax, based on the true story of a veteran from the Thai/Burma railway construction in WWII and all that entails. Definitely one to watch.

Watched a movie I really enjoyed last night called 47 Ronin.
It's another adaptation of the story about 47 masterless samurai (or 'Ronin') out to get revenge for the death of their master. Filled with brilliant special effects and beautiful settings, it kept me interested throughout the 2 hours.
I'll just copy and paste this one...
While hunting in the forest, Lord Asano of Ako and his samurai find a young half-breed and take him with them to live in the castle. Several years later, Lord Asano holds a tournament to welcome the Shogun to Ako. The night after the tournament, Lord Asano is bewitched into hurting Lord Kira of Nagato, and is punished into committing seppuku by the Shogun. Realizing that it was a Lord Kira's evil plot, the samurais and the half-breed sets out for revenge against the Shogun's order.

Re: Movies on DVD
Ok.... lets do a mini roundup of a few Ive watched recently
ROBOCOP
You pretty much know when Hollydud does a revamp on a beloved flick its going to end up badly.....and here it does. Its not that its a bad film - it has lots of biffs, bangs and whallops, and eye candy a plenty with cutting edge CGI and some gooshy bits when you get to see what is inside Robey. But all that cheese and dark humor joie de vivre of the first flick is gone, expunged and replaced with some awfully slapped on social commentary that falls flat on its ass.
The bare bones of the story is the same, but again they have cut away at the fun aspects of it and replaced the fun with a real nasty ashes in the mouth preachy tone.
It was an entertaining watch, but an empty one, and I have to say that if like me you loved the classic first flick, this one wont sit well.
Two cheers for the eye candy. Not a keeper by a long stretch.
THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG
Picking up where the first left off we follow our vertically challenged pack of wannabe theives across the middle bit of the journey, through a scruffy Laketown ruled by the gloriously hammy Stephen Fry, and all the way into nasty Smaug's gold pile sleeping chamber, where an unfortunate Bilbo wakes him up.
Top marks stuff, even with the annoying extra-added-ninja-skillz-elves pandering that gets spliced in unnecessarily
what can I say.....its a Jackson middle earth flick. Of course it scores three cheers and is a full on fire breathing keeper.
300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE
I loved the first flick, and was really looking forward to part 2. Oh dear.
Like the first it retells greek history in the way an epic storyteller in Hellenic times would have - full of epic deeds, big monsters, and bloody battles. In this case it is the battle at sea, led by the Athenians, that ran parallel to the land battle at Thermopylae. While Leonidas and his 300 are holding back the Persian army, out at sea the Athenian general Themostikles is having a hard time holding back the Persian fleet, led by the foxy and psychotic lady admiral Artemisia. Can the wooden wall of Athens withstand the onlaught...and how many slow-mo-choppy-splatterfest segments can we fit in?
Just one problem. All the lovely warm colours of battle and death in the first flick are here replaced with dull mushy greys and blues....just watching the flick makes me depressed, let alone the god awful chopped liver way the story is strung together.
No fun, and like an Athenian watching Xerxes burn Athens, Im a little bitter and very sad indeed.
Two cheers, and maybe I will recant and keep it. It balances on the edge of a blade. Only the lovely goth Eva Green in chainmail with swords can save it now....
Oh go on then.....you are a keeper
All out now in lovely hi rez burns at all the usual suspects.
laters chaps and chapesses.
