Anybody with an idea as I do not think there is an agent for Kindle in Hua Hin. There is in Bangkok but I seldom go there.

Thank you

I have had a Kindle Fire for some time now and really do rate it highly. I did however have some issues with WiFi connectivity and was recommended to "Root" the system to Android. Now works perfectly and can use as Kindle or as Android device - also downloading additional Android Apps.

An old thread I know but ...

Thinking of getting one of these finally. What you guys use? Is Amazon the only option or are there more standard ones that read all formats? As far as I see Amazon are like Apple in that they want to lock you into their ecosystem and out of any others.

Are they cheaper here (I know Thais dont read) or better to buy in the UK? Don't need anything fancy, just a basic reader with a back light that accepts all file formats.

My son has a kindle. Downloads loads of books - never paid for one in his life. If the download isn't compatible, there's plenty of free software available to make it so.

It should be cheaper in the UK and a much larger selection. I would go with the "Paperwhite", Generation 10 (current) which is waterproof as well. As BB mentions there are enough books available for several lifetimes. I would also opt for a closing cover which I don't think is included free any longer. See below link.

Buks, you can buy them in Curry's, John Lewis etc etc or of course on the net.
I've had a Paperwhite for years now and it performs as well as ever. As has been said above, the latest version is slightly slimmer than mine and is waterproof (not that I take mine swimming).
Do get a decent leather cover (about 30 GBP) as it has a sleep function and obviously protects the screen. The device should cost about 100 GBP.

As far as downloading is concerned, just use your usual/favourite torrent sites. Pirate Bay is still good and another that sometimes gives more seeders is https://1337x.to/ although I rarely find something on there that isn't on PB and downloads are small and quick anyway.

As far as formats are concerned, the Kindle is compatible with MOBI but most books these days are EPUB. However, just use an ebook management system. I use https://calibre-ebook.com/ and it'll convert format to format automatically. Easy. It'll also retain your library if you need to delete stuff from the Kindle. The only format I don't like is PDF files. In my experience, they come out badly formatted and in gibberish.

For inspiration, after I exhausted all my favourite author's book, I now simply search for best sellers a few times a month, read reviews and then decide whether to download. I'll pretty much guarantee that a best seller will be downloadable within days. I link to newspapers' book columns etc etc. That's just ideas.
You won't go wrong with a Kindle. I also love the "feel" of a book but hell when I've got one of largest free libraries on hand through torrent sites - well, what can I say?
Together with my golf clubs and computer, I'd be lost without the Kindle now. And I don't know how the first two work.
PS, the thing is that you don't have to use Amazon. You maybe won't be able to access the torrent sites in the UK but Amazon do have loads of free books that have gone out of copywrite. So, if you can get by with Dickens, Austen, Conrad, Kafka etc etc, do so and fill your boots when you get back here.
Oh yeah, it was your good self that advised me years ago just to leave the device in aeroplane mode so the gits won't know what I'm doing. Just like leaving MS updates off. The Amazon internet thing is a con.

Good info guys - yep just had a look and they're about half the price in the UK. Don't need the latest and greatest, I guess this will do it:

Be aware of the difference to a paperwhite. I guess it all depends upon how much you will read and how sensitive your eyes are to glare.

"Amazon Kindle vs Paperwhite
The Paperwhite has a slightly better frontlight (the lower edge isn't as bright) but the difference is subtle. The Paperwhite has a flush front screen, whereas the entry-level Kindle has an indented screen. The flush screen is a bit more reflective and fingerprints are more visible.Apr 18, 2019"

EDIT: Honestly I think that review has it backwards as in my experience the paperwhite has less glare.

I've had a Kindle paperwhite for about 6 years or more. I'm very happy with it, easy to read in the dark, or light. As mentioned tons of books for download and software to change formats.

When back in the UK I'll have a try of them both in the shop, the price difference over there isn't that much.

I have a Kindle Touch that is seven years old and still works fine, it's not much different from the basic Kindle that's available now.
For content, I use the Kindle unlimited subscription that gives you a whole load of books for 7.99 month as I can't be bothered to illegally download stuff to save so little.
I read a lot so I definitely get my monies worth.

I also use the subscription and like it.

Save so little?
I've had around 2,000 books on the Kindle. At approx whatever, say 350 THB a book, that's some significant saving for me.
Of course, I'm a pirate but I'm not going to try and justify myself.

Yes, it's obviously a personal choice but as I'm still working, it's worth 7.99 a month to me not to have to bother messing around with a computer to find books on illegal downloads when I can just download them straight to the Kindle via wifi. I don't even own a computer anymore since my last laptop became obsolete, I just use a large mobile, the Kindle and a smart TV when I'm in Thailand and everything else I do on shared computers at work, which wont' let you go onto those pirate sites anyway!
