Well I just learnt something new. The reporter on that link is called Lindsay Murdoch. It's a man. A man called Lindsay. You can name a boy Lindsay.

:lach:

No wonder he looks so pissed off. :D

There are Lindsays and Lindseys and Lyndseys. I have a male friend called Lynn, he prefers his nickname of Gung as in 'gung ho'.

Anyway, when I am in BKK in January I will take a taxi more often and skip the night walks.

Two Years ago walking past Asoke (North side)with friends I was unprepared for a 'seize and grab' raid from two ladyboys. I managed to spin and throw off into the bushes the one who tried to pin my arms , the other ran off.
I'm sure resisting police attention would be unpleasant.

All those couples/families, sitting hours in bars are not good consumers, they just have one drink each and go to bed early. Not very interesting customers for bars.

Yes, but they spend money in the morning when we drinkers are still slumbering!

STEVE G, you are wrong, they are not spending one Baht in the morning. They are eating all they can at breakfast at their hotel, spending the day at the beach with some drinks and no food. After an early dinner, again one drink each in a bar....

My 10 satang worth...............

I've said it before but I'll say it again. Over the last 10 or more years the profile of tourism to Hua Hin has changed.

Years ago there were more young, single souls about who's habits generally were beach/sleep during the day and partying in the bars at night. Hence the Binta block was often heaving to the point where traffic down the sois was restricted by the number of bodies overflowing from the bars. Now the tourists are older, couples and families who's habits are more mundane. You will still find tourists who venture out for a late breakfast and then call into a good bar for a couple of sherberts before venturing down to the beach.

The big change is regarding expats who live here. The lack of them in the Binta block is driven by the fact the prices are higher due to the exorbitant rents and expats here on a tight budget are also more aware of more reasonable priced bars/mom and pop shops around the town.

Pretty simple really for anyone who's frequented this part of the world regularly or lived here for a few years

ps: So where are all the young bloods? Pattaya, Phuket, Cambodia or Indonesia

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

Yeah... bastids!! Bar owners should ban anyone not prepared to buy at least 4 drinks.
This is the way

Occupancy in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok has fallen 34% over the last year and their profits have fallen 117%. Its probably a bellwether for the tourist sector. The management doesn't have any doubt about the reason:

The reason of net loss for financial results in the third quarter year 2014 compared to net
profit for the same quarter in year 2013 due to the announcement of martial law on 20
May 2014 and followed by declaration of a military coup on 22 May 2014 had an
immediate impact on the bookings and resulted in multiple cancellations. Travel advisory
notices were announced by many countries not to travel to Thailand due to security.
Businessmen and travelers postponed and cancelled their trips to Bangkok as well as the
events and meetings were cancelled which resulted in less room reservation but increased
cancellations. Revenue from food and beverage and other were also decreased. This
situation continued from second to third quarter.

Collapse of rouble having effect?

Post by uncle tom »

Picked up on a news item today about the Russian rouble collapsing by 45% so far this year..

..wondered if this was having a knock-on effect on Russian tourism and investment in the LoS

- or have they all got their savings in US dollars??

I'd call myself an "experienced tourist". I've hung around with a lot of expats over the past few months, but I don't pretend to know a percentage of what they know.

That said, thailand has become very unwelcoming to people like me. Two or three weeks is fine, but once the gloss goes, it really exposes the undercurrents that we talk about here. If you don't know how to get around the intricacies,Chou don't know the right people, it's a minefield.

For example, I did an extension on my tourist visa recently. It was half an hour of form stamping, passport stamping and collecting 1900Bt. I would be happy to pay £40 extra for a 90 day tourist visa, but no. I have to queue, re queue..... well, you know!

Other places in the Orient are more welcoming, cheaper, and (let's face it) have more attractive young ladies to tend to your every whim.

The political situation doesn't help. The face-saving that goes with it is a major problem to farangs, whether they know it or not.
